BLYTHE - With a 3-2 vote, Blythe City Council appointed Frank Luckino as Interim City Manager effective Oct. 15 at a Friday night special meeting.

Vice Mayor Sam Patel, Mike Evans, and Wayne Cusick (via phone) voted in favor of Luckino while Mayor Oscar Galvan and Joey DeConinck voted for Mallory Sutterfield to get the position.

Luckino is the city's current finance director. Sutterfield has served as interim city manager since David Lane's retirement and subsequent paid voluntary leave Oct. 2. Before that date, Sutterfield was the city manager's assistant. She has also served as city clerk since 2009.

The night's vote included appointments for Sutterfield to Interim Assistant City Manager and Christa Elms to Assistant Finance Manager.

Each appointment means each person will receive a five percent pay raise for the duration of appointment for an approximate cost of $11,000 to the city.

Each appointment is good through the end of June 2014 with the stipulation that the council can change its mind at anytime.

As I listened to the candidates at the forum I thought at last hope for our community. But, alas, it is still the same.
We have a very well qualified young lady that could step in the City Manager Position and fulfill all aspects of the job quite well and then "wham" an out of towner is put in instead. Well, I can honestly say, my vote changed and when the other two come up for re-election my vote won't go to either of them. Thank you to Joey and Oscar for trying to do the right thing....my vote lies with you two.
And to Mallory, the City is the loser on this vote...
Shame on the council ....

Here we had a chance to give a locally born and raised person to fill the position and we chose to hire the shiny new out of towner. The question got asked at the city council forum about hiring from within to fill positions when they become open. All the candidates agreed that hiring from within is the best choice when it is possible. I am sorry but hiring the person that is from out of town and has been here for a couple of months does not fit my idea of hiring from within. Mallory has shown that she is very capable and that she has the more extensive knowledge of what is going on at city hall. The message has once again been sent to our youth that when you come back home, after getting an education and showing that you are capable, that this town just can not seem to give you a fair shake. Truly sad and Sam Patel I can tell you that you will not be getting my vote in November. The fact that you seem to think there is plenty of money to do everything in this town when the city is still in debt 2 million dollars and now this just shows that you should not be in a position of leadership in our community.

The better choice would have been Mallory Sutterfield. Now lets get Smith out of town and we can rid our city of all the drama that he and Lane caused.
