UPDATED: Desert Center plane crash claims the lives of two Blythe men
First Solar CEO identifies men as Mike Cyr and Jeff Randall
Special to the Times

A plane crash in the Desert Center area on Monday, afternoon claimed the lives of two Blythe men. While the Riverside County Coroner's office only identified the men as being a 41-year-old pilot and a 35-year-old passenger, local aviator Mike Cyr was said to be the pilot of the aircraft and Jeff Randall the passenger, according to First Solar CEO Jim Hughes.

A powerful storm that blew through the area on Sunday night had caused a blackout in the Desert Center area, which led to an increased sheriff's presence. A Colorado River Station sheriff's deputy and a Bureau of Land Management ranger were patrolling the Desert Center area when they witnessed the small plane flying out of control and crash in the desert area east of Kaiser Road between Lake Tamarisk and the First Solar energy site.  The plane was a 1971 Model AA-1A fixed wing with a single engine. Personnel from Cal-Fire, Colorado River Station, BLM, the Coroner's Office, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) responded to investigate the crash. The cause of the crash is still being investigated by the NTSB and FAA.

Anyone with information about this investigation is encouraged to contact Colorado River Station investigators at (760) 921-7900.

First Solar CEO Hughes said, "The First Solar community was deeply saddened to learn of the deaths of two associates in an accident near the Desert Sunlight Solar Project this afternoon.

"Mike Cyr and Jeff Randall, both civil supervisors at the project, were in a single engine aircraft flying over the project when the airplane crashed near the site. The accident is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.

"We extend our deepest condolences to Mike and Jeff's families and loved ones. We are in contact with the families, and are providing our support in this difficult time."

I hurt for the loss of my nephew. But I know that he is in good hands now. You were a great person before the tats and a great man ,and husband and father after. I grieve for your mom, my little sister Ruthy, no mother should lose their child like this. I know God will help her thru this. I know that Grandma is with you, and she loved you very much.
I will see you again.

My heart is broken by the loss of my brother Jeff. I can't imagine navigating life without you. Your heart was enormous and in life you have touched so many. I promise to share our memories with our kids and never let them forget you. You were taken from us way too soon. You will always be my big little brother. I hope you always know how much I love you.
To the Cyr family. I am so sorry for the loss of your husband, son, father, brother and friend. I know our families are grieving equally. I have you all in my prayers.

To the Cyr Family, Through my over whelming grief I failed to mention you and your loss of their Husband,Son & Father and for that please forgive me. I understand my son was found with his arm around Mike comforting him like the person he always was. In some small way I find comfort that two buddies went together with a lot of love, probably praying for their families.

I knew Mikey for 30 years and he was always there when I needed him, I wish I could have repayed him somehow. All I know is that when Mikey passed, the world became a lesser place.

Dear Ruthie,Wayne,Jenn, two daughters and all the wonderful family. I was never so shocked by the news of what happened on Monday afternoon. I will always keep Jeff in my memories as the guy with the proud tattoo's all over and ever so proud of each and every one of them. Jeff was a son who at times when needed stood by his mother,a husband who stood by his wife with her medical problems and one proud father of his two adorable daughters. Hey brother Jeff, you may be physically out of sight now but you will never be forgotten by any of us. We all loved you Jeff.

My heart aches for the loss of you Jeff. It saddens me that your wife and little girls will not have you any longer. I can't stop thinking about all the memories that we have together, starting when we were only 7 years old. I always knew that if I ever needed anything you would have been there, just as a brother would be. But that is how you are... you have a huge heart. Thank you for that Jeff. I will cherish all of the memories we have, and there are a lot! I will always remember you telling me you are older than me and me saying "yeah well only by two months!" The thought that you are only two months older than me and you are now gone saddens me deeply. You are too young for this. This can't be true. I know you are with Bill and that does make me feel a little better. So please tell him hi for me. I will forever remember you my dear friend and the only brother I have ever known. I know you are going to have fun wherever you are and nothing will stop you! This world will not be the same without you.... until we meet again.... Love you Jeffrey

Oct. 7 1977 I gave birth to this amazing person who has brought so much joy to so many. The heart ache is so huge I can't even begin to explain. As his mother I was crushed when he first got all his tattoos but I was once told not to be upset because his heart wasn't tattooed. For everyone that has ever known my son he has left a tattoo on all of our hearts. Life as we once knew it will be forever changed. I love you Jeff who was always my baby boy.The pain is suppose to ease but I can't see how. Dance with the angels your in the best company until were united again.
Love, Mom
