TIMES EDITORIAL: We're not fooled; don't you be
Hossain Sahlolbei
Hossain Sahlolbei

The recent Times story on the dismissal of the Palo Verde Healthcare District's lawsuit against Palo Verde Hospital Chief of Staff Dr. Hossain Sahlolbei is just another nauseating chapter in the annals of the hospital since Sahlolbei's arrival.

Sahlolbei can claim victory in that dismissal, but the fact of the matter is that board members Sahlolbei helped elect who were beholden to him refused to vote to pay the attorneys that were fighting the case for the district. As a result, the attorneys withdrew from the case and the board's new/old attorney, Jeff Scott, will do as the board instructs him if he wishes to continue drawing fees from the hospital. With three votes in his pocket, - Trina Sartin, Sam Burton, and former landlady Sandy Hudson, Sahlolbei can pretty much write his own ticket, and if that means putting an end to a lawsuit against him, then that's what will happen.

It's the American way; you put in power the government that serves you best, not one that's going to be fair to all.

Anyone who thinks Sahlolbei is just an innocent victim of past boards or the newspaper needs to remember that the one constant in most all of the infamous travails of Palo Verde Hospital is Sahlolbei.

His hot temper and tantrums have been the source of many of the hospital's problems, including its high employee and management turnover rate, and the reason why Palo Verde College doesn't allow its nursing students to practice at the hospital, instead sending them to institutions as far as Parker, Ariz. and Indio, Calif.

For more than a decade now the hospital, staff members, board members and people in the community have been embroiled in lawsuits with Sahlolbei. Numerous times boards have been on the verge of ridding the community of his presence only to have a new board elected that was favorable to him.

This happened when the management firm Brim, which reportedly settled its suit with Sahlolbei on the condition that he leave, was taken over by AHM, which allowed Sahlolbei to stay.

When Sahlolbei fell out with AHM and the board at that time, again the lawsuits were flying. Sahlolbei got a board, which included Sandy Hudson, that was favorable to him and the lawsuits went away and Sahlolbei once again remained on staff.

Then, when Sahlolbei fell out of favor with the board and hospital management this time, Sartin and Hudson won board seats, and the suit was dismissed.

While Sahlolbei and his attorney can claim these as victories, it doesn't fool us and shouldn't fool the thinking public.

While Sahlolbei invokes his concern for patient care every time he doesn't get his way, when he does get his way, he ends up with more money and more power.

If patient care is his primary concern, then he needs to focus on performing surgeries and quit with the politics.

...and the hospital's lack of revenue for years to come as patients flock out of town for medical care can also be blamed on this nonsense and greed. Once people go out of town for medical care, they will likely not return. This loss of revenue means less ability to ever increase services or buy updated equipment. He and the board members he affiliates with have caused irreparable damage to the health and welfare of this community for today and for many generations to come. It will be a miracle if it ever recovers.

What is just as disappointing is that he seems to have no problem with finding people as immoral as he is to back him up. I believe his actions go far deeper than Blythe, per se. This is a man whose upbringing in a place where life means nothing let's him feel no qualms about carrying a gun into a Hospital because where he comes from it's a necessity. Not carrying a gun in Iran is like not having T.P. when you have the trots! His impressions of how people should treat each other were formed in the chaos & mental insanity of a Religious Revolution. He does not see life in any way remotely similar to anyone born & raised in the U.S.! $$$ and Power are ALWAYS more important than individual life to someone like that as we can see every day in every news broadcast & report! Perhaps as sad as his actions is the fact he is incapable of feeling remorse for the hurt his greed causes individual patients & their family/friends as well as the entire community.

If Dr. S is so sincere about helping to improve the patient care then why does he keep suing the hospital? All that wasted money on lawyer fees instead of being able to provide improvements to the hospital. Also he has the power over the "sheep" and the ability to put the directorships on hold and decrease the on call pay. Follow the money! Who is looking our for we little people? Certainly not Dr S. These people are out for their own agendas and the people in this town aren't on those agendas! Lord help the people of Blythe!
