LETTER: Former ER Doc offers clarification

I was mentioned in the newspaper last week under the hospital board meeting and I would like to clarify some of the issues that were brought up.

I had previously worked at Palo Verde Hospital and it was stated that I had signed a contract to be employed there as an independent. It was mentioned by the board that there were previous problems and that I and other doctors from a previous time were dismissed because of complaints that the doctors had received.

I have not signed a contract to work again at Palo Verde. In the discussion of where our names are mentioned individually in last week's article, it was stated that we were dismissed because of the number of complaints we had previously. That was not the reason for dismissal of our group. The administrator at that time, said the ER docs should record how much time it took the surgeon to call back to the ER when we called him for help.

I was to keep this information a secret. I let the surgeon know that he was being watched and hoped he would improve his time and he wouldn't get into trouble. This information then got back to the administrator that I had informed the surgeon.

The administrator was upset, to say the least, and he said there was now a lack of trust at this point. That was the reason for our dismissal.

I blame only myself for engaging in the politics of Palo Verde Hospital. In regards to the number of complaints that were levied against Dr. Strecker, Dr. Runyan, and myself, there was a total of 13. Those complaints ranged from the doctor was rude, the doctor didn't give me what I thought I needed for pain medications, to the doctor was too slow in seeing me, etc.

I have been an ER administrator for the last 20 years, all ER's have complaints. In this case, 13 complaints, you would need to know how many patient visits that generated the 13 complaints. If we saw 26 patients and had 13 complaints, we would have a complaint rate of 50 percent or one out of two.

In our case, we had 13 complaints and we had seen in excess of 10,000 patients. So our complaint rate was about 1 out of 1,000.

Again, you can't determine if that's good or bad because you would need to compare that to the national average.

Working for Emcare, they have ER's of our size throughout the country and it would need to be compared to other ERs of that size. The approximate rate of complaints for ERs our size is 1 percent or 10 complaints for every 1,000 patients seen.

As you can see, we were way, way below on average complaints.

Another indictor is when you look at ER doctors is how many lawsuits they've had for the hospital. Dr. Strecker had been there for 20 years, Dr. Runyan had been there for five years, and I had been there for 15 years. Total of about 40 years of practice for the three of us at Palo Verde.

With 40 years of practice there, not one medical malpractice suit had occurred. These facts all speak for themselves. The three of us provided exceptional care to the people of Blythe and surrounding areas. When we left, I felt sorrow for leaving many of the patients that we had cared for over the years.

I wish the very best for Palo Verde Hospital, the community, and the city. Thanks for the opportunity for the chance to clarify the last article.

- Matthew C. Kidd, MD, MPH

Can you tell me one case of where someone was not given their right to choose what form of transpotation they wanted? I have not heard of one instance yet that this has happened since the board has changed. With the last board we had multiple people come and say at public meetings how the ER doctors tried to force them to use the helicopter. Some of those people were even hospital employees family members, one was even the wife of a local doctor. All I am saying is where was the outrage then? Why is now so different? Personally I would rather be flown by a local company with local people flying me out. I want my money going to those that reside and support this community instead of some outside company that just wants to suck this town dry and put nothing back into it. Its just like Sam Patel said in his last guest column about supporting locals. plus the locals are cheaper and work with those that can not afford it because they have to see those peoples faces in the community and do not want to cause them severe financial harm when they are already down. Out of town companies can care less, you are just a number.

Looks to me the eyes of the public are seeing things the way they have been now, for all too long. And, they are finally speaking up, loud and clear. We need to keep the pressure on, as there appear to be some cracks in their personnel. We can clearly see what - and WHO - is running this hospital. It is MONEY and greed, the patients be damned. Now let's keep exposing them for what they are, and we can close that group down. Then we can work on other cleaning up of the scum in town. When one person speaks out, that gives another the courage to speak out. There comes all that filthy laundry that they have been protecting for so long! Let's get that hospital squeaky clean!

For the record I didn't and still dont care if there is a helicopter at the hospital 24/7...I do not have an agenda. What I stated in my comment is they better make sure I fly the way I choose to.. now would be so kind to tells us how patients are being transported . I will not be transported the way Sahlolbei and the Er doctor feels is safest and quickest to line her pockets..And thats what this is all about ..Theres your short memory thank you...P.S.I have more concern about the patients care which is still not the quailty care that was promised and even more so about who is holding the knife..No one I can trust...

No exclusive contract just an Exclusive Doctor forcing you to use his friends service. At least for now. If she has to buck him at some point then all bets are off and maybe we will get the Helicopters back again!
This is all power and money not Patient CARE!
SO SO SAD!

@Short Memory. You are 100% right. We had a discussion on a plane or helicopter. But it was about cost. On which was the cheapest. But later it turned into time. In which of the 2 would get people the fastest to next hospital. In the end to me, if 10 minutes or 2 hours will NOT KILL, the patient, then I believe that the patient or family members should be the ones making the choice to use the plane or copter.

The usual handful of the same old people that comment on the hospital sure have a selective memory. We have one complaining about how they better not fly them out via plane. Just a few short months ago though you were all for an exclusive with the helicopter even though there were people dead set against it that wanted to have a choice. The hospital staff even argued with many patients that wanted to fly with the plane and the staff tried forcing them to fly with the helicopter. But you all were ok with it then? Sounds like an agenda to me. Just to make sure you realize it but you still have a choice of transportation and there is no exclusive contract to change that being offered. Only the last board wanted to take away our choice.

You know what I know.I know all about the come back of the old doctor...There is $$$ money involved..I didn't like him and complained about him when he was here before...I still believe patients have a right to how they want to be transported..I will fight and sue if they put me on her plane...I want to go via helicopter...I am stating to think we may have a cult running the hospital..Things are not getting better like PVH would have us believe..Street talk is getting stronger regarding revenge ...

I understand the bord took no action to authorize Twin Sandy to do anything regarding the ER doc. So, she couldn't have been acting as a board member since the board can only act as a public body. It sounds like Blitz, the deer in headlights, is making the same mistake that Klune made in letting Twin Sandy think she and The Problem (aka Dr Sohlobi) are running things.

This is why the good Dr. S recruits these type of Dr's, because he can control them. With their bad record, all he has to do is bring it up. That is even if they now have their act squared away. They are damaged goods. And they could be easily manipulated. In this town who would believe these out of town Dr's over the word of the Good Dr. S

To the person going as @ Former Resident. What Doctor or type of Doctor. Let's see maybe a Doctor that is not a zombie. Like one with free will. Not a puppet. But wait. The good Dr. S here will not hire this type of Doctor here. Plus any good doctor worth his salt would never come here with these people in charge here.
