TIMES EDITORIAL: Hospital's new interim-CEO might be too ethical to last

We're not sure if the Palo Verde Healthcare District Board members know it but they recently hired Larry Blitz as interim-CEO to oversee the day-to-day operations at Palo Verde Hospital.

We're not sure because of late, Board President Trina Sartin and member Sandy Hudson seem to be running the Healthcare District Board - with little if any participation invited from the other board members.

We at the Times sincerely wish Blitz the best because he seems like an amicable fellow with a lot of knowledge of rural hospitals, particularly hospitals that are struggling as Palo Verde Hospital is... or isn't, depending on the politics of the moment.

In a meeting with the Times, Blitz spoke often of leadership and the importance of developing a positive and helpful attitude among staff. Customer service was another issue he thinks is fundamental to being a quality care center. We couldn't agree more, which makes us wonder if Blitz, with his radical way of thinking, will be around long enough to implement his plans and make the changes needed to take PVH to the next level.

History has proven that those who take the lead and move things in a positive direction at Palo Verde Hospital soon find themselves persona non grata. The unfortunate truth is that unless one caters to the whims of the hospital's medical staff and their puppets on the board, no matter how outrageous or unethical their demands may be, that person will become a target for hate and relentless attacks until they are either fired or forced to leave.

We've watched while at least 10 employees have departed the hospital in the two months since Hudson and Sartin have taken office, most of them managers, all of them targets of the medical staff, which seems to control board member Sam Burton as well. Even the interim-CEO prior to Blitz, a Mr. Sandy Haskins, was asked by Sartin not to return after just two days on the job, which he spent meeting with hospital staff members. The rumor is he found out what the real problem at Palo Verde Hospital is and that wasn't what Sartin and Hudson wanted to hear.

Blitz is a nice guy and while nice guys reportedly finish last, it is our hope that Blitz's positive attitude and his belief in customer service will win out over the negativity that has controlled this hospital off and on over the course of the past 10 years or more.

Unfortunately, Blitz seems to be an ethical man and ethical people never seem to last long at Palo Verde Hospital. We know it's just a matter of time before he will have to make a moral decision that will elicit the wrath of the medical staff and his days will be numbered, as were the days of Brehm, AHM, John Ferelli and Peter Klune. But we're going to remain optimistic and hope that Blitz's stint as interim CEO will lead to productive changes in the atmosphere of the hospital and in the way it cares for patients. It's a lot to hope for knowing the history of PVH and its medical staff, but sometimes it takes just one person who believes.

Article comment by: want to know why your hospital is losing money?

You are on hundred percent correct that surgeries are down at PV Hospital. The real question you have to ask is why. It may be because the prison drastically reduced the amount of prisoners it sends there after some of their needs were not met by management. Maybe it has to do with things like the sterilization equipment being broke down and a lack of backup supplies on hand causing the surgeons to have to send patients out of town. It may also have to be the constant negative publicity that the hospital has received in the last 4 months like being ranked as one of the 25 worst hospitals in the country causing more people to seek services elsewhere. I am sure there are lots of reasons why the hospital is losing money and if you think the new board can turn it around in 3 months then you are crazy.

Want facts and figures? How about documents that back up the facts?

Go read PVVT article "FPPC rules Hudson has conflict and can't vote on issues concerning hospital chief of staff, Sahlolbei"

http://www.paloverdevalleytimes.com/main.asp?SectionID=1&SubSectionID=1&ArticleID=18376

It appears that the PVVT is the only place you are going to get the truth with documents to back it up.

@Losing Money The hospital also gets people who are not insured and cannot turn them away. That's why it's important for PVVT to inform the community in all aspects of the hospital. It's more than just the board or a Dr. It's fine for people to voice where they stand on some issues, but there are subjects beyond what we have been reading that impact the hospital's financial situation whether positively or negatively.

maybe you should try reading more than the pvvt and the national enquirer. If you want an example of proper opinion writing then you should look no further than the piece in the newspaper on school truancy laws. The writer uses facts and figures to back up his premise in that piece. I do by the way know the difference between a horse and a zebra and also know a, let's use the word for not getting deleted, burro when I see or read about one.

Article comment by: Want to know why your hospital is loosing MONEY!

Read the Financial Report to be presented to the Board this Wednesday. This report was prepared by HSF consultants.

“The hospital continues to generate operating losses. For the seven months ending January 31, 2013 the hospital has incurred a loss from operations totaling approximately $2.6 million”

• Surgery cases of 80 and 538 for the month of January and year-to-date,
respectively. Prior year to date cases of 754. ** (28.6% REDUCTION year-todate)**

WHO IS YOUR SURGEON that would slowdown his support of your hospital to get their way?

FYI - The round orange fruit is called an "orange" the roundish red fruit is called an "apple". They are two different things. They are not really comparable. Understand? Similarly, a "news" article, as might be found on the front page of a newspaper, and several other pages, is the who, what, why, where, and how, of a story that gives information. Now, on page 4 of the Palo Verde Valley Times newspaper are all opinions, called the "Op Page" in some papers. They are not the same breed of animal as a news article. As has been said several times, columns and/or letters to the editor on this page are NOT related to a news article, except that they are typed, and in this paper, they are in English. To help you understand, you may know that a horse and a zebra are very similar in many ways, but the zebra has black and white stripes, making it clearly distinguishable from a horse, burro, donkey, etc. Please don't preach your propaganda by claiming incorrect information concerning news writing and/or opinion columns so you can attempt your negative bashing of the local newspaper. Especially when it is doing an extraordinarily fine job of exposing the hospital board (3/5 of it anyway) and the MEC for what they truly are. Actually, your opinion pieces are pretty rare on "facts", if you are going to bash others writing factless opinions. Got it?

I am sure that an interm ceo was hired and I along with any person in their right mind would argue that. I have not personally met the man to judge his character so I can not argue for or against the PVVT assesment of the man. The rest of the "article" or editorial is not backed with any facts or statistics and is solely one persons opinion of the situation at the hospital, of which I do not agree with. People in town have figured out that the PVVT has an agenda it is pushing, that is obvious from its 2 to 3 a week articles or editorials that are always negative and always attack Sam Burton, Trina Sartin, and Sandy Hudson. We heard almost nothing about the hospital for two years until the candidates the PVVT backed lost and it seems they are sore losers that can not get past it and will stop at nothing, even destroying the hospital to get their revenge. I can rest easily though knowing that the people they love to bash will fight tooth and nail to keep the doors open despite the efforts of the PVVT and I know there are many good people in this community that will do whatever it takes to help them. For all of you that love to sit behind your computer and do nothing but complain there is a board meeting on Wed at 5pm at the city hall if you wish to actually try and make a difference instead of just complaining. I promise they will let you voice your displeasures and may even address some of your concerns

Boy, you really helped a lot. If it is said, "according to a source at the hospital" adds absolutely nothing to any kind of credibility. IF any credible employees granted an interview, they would not be credible - they would be either crazy or suicidable. Anybody who REALLY knows what is going on knows that being truthful at the hospital is no the route to long-term employment. THAT is why it is so difficult to cover. Much research has to be done. As to checking with a board member or MEC doctors, that is a total waste as their party line, as demonstrated by their anonymous expensive flyer, is always the same. Now, Cat would be a good source, but that is too much to ask of her, since so much of what is actually happening is kept from her and Quitty. The unholy trio is clearly keeping them out of actually participating in the business at the hospital. That, too, is another unethical example of their behavior, if not illegal. But who cares? Trina et.al. refuse to do anything (deleted)

So what you are saying is the article is true. You can not dispute the facts so you resort to attacking the article with meaningless dribble.

Then the writer should say "according to a source at the hospital" or something to that nature in order for it to be credible. That is the way most writers at newspapers all over the country frame a statemate such as the one made by the PVVT. To say "rumor" makes the PVVT seem like the Blythe Enquirer. How is one suppose to know the validity of a statement if they do not at least give the relationship of the source? To say rumor has it just makes them seem like gossip that this town is famous for.
