COLUMN: Let's get going, Blythe!
Bob Weete
Essay

After these many years of charges, counter-charges, lawsuits, threats, insults, harassment, etc., isn't it about time that the community of Blythe finally came out together and actually get some kind of resolution of this hospital mess, and let's do it now, one way or the other.

There has been entirely too much money and energy spent with lawsuits and all kinds of suspected improprieties, secret meetings, under-handed dealings, etc. As would be expected, none of this has had any measurable good effect on the hospital we need so badly here in Blythe.

Many of the comments have been "rumors", many of them true, but still rumored, and many comments have been made on line with undisclosed writers which are given because people are afraid.

They have reason to be afraid. None of us can afford to go through the mess of a lawsuit, and we all know how there are people very willing to use the lawsuit procedure to scare people off. It is a standard technique used by certain kinds of people.

We have businesses that could be threatened, and we have jobs we need to keep, so it is a pretty effective way to silence people.

Boards come and boards go; CEOs come, and CEOs go. And there is one common denominator in all the commotion, and we all know what that is.

We get a board, and the medical staff likes him/her, until they don't follow the dictates of the medical staff, so we are in turmoil, and lawsuits appear, board members disappear.

We get a CEO, and he/she is "acceptable" by the real power that is, and then there is a big blow up, because the CEO does something that displeases the medical staff and, guess what? Another lawsuit and/or vilification..

We have cases, as you've read, of "possible" conflict of interest on the part of board members, and there are a jillion "explanations" to deflect the charges. We have a couple of new board members, and the hospital chief of staff meeting privately with yet another lawyer to "fix" things, and one wonders what the devil is going on there. Why only the two new board members? And, why is the chief of staff in such a meeting? And why the hush-hush?

We all pretty well know by now about the "donation" that was given to the church of one of the board members by the chief of staff. And the fact that it was given "by a third party" is interesting.

Then we have the information that the chief of staff is renting from one of the board members' husband and niece. I am sure there is some kind of "explanation", but personally, I'm not buying it. And there is also the third board member who happens to own an ambulance service that is being promoted by the same doctor.

Now, the medical staff members and their supporters constantly blame the Palo Verde Valley Times for making their business public and they get their cohorts in these activities to support them.

The chief of staff has even gone to the city council with long presentations and diatribes against the paper, trying to get their support. You would think the city council has enough stuff on their own plate, that they don't need to get in the mud here, too.

Elections are fraught with even more of these activities. Now, there are all kinds of explanations that are made to sound magnanimous and caring, but that is cowpie deluxe. Have you noticed that certain candidates have posters that are all alike? Maybe bought and paid for by the same people? And for what responsible reason? Think about it.

Finally, I ask you and all of you who are tired of being afraid to use our hospital facility to put your concerns in writing. You can write to the following attorney with the Fair Political Practice Commission:

Mr. Zackery P. Morazzini, Esq., Fair Political Practice Commission, 428 J. Street, Suite 800, Sacramento, CA 95814. In addition, there is a toll free tip line you may call: 800-561-1861. Hit'em both up.

This is important. Please to not "assume" that your comments will mean nothing. Everybody does count, and we must take this opportunity to do what is right here, for our community.

Don't think you are not a good writer. Do it anyway; it's not spelling and punctuation that counts.

It's what you say that is important here. Yes, you will be sticking your necks out a bit, but it will be difficult for us all to be sued. "We have nothing to fear but fear itself".

I would be willing to bet that if you looked at the transports over the past two years you would see a steady decline in patients flown out by desert air and you would see a very large decline starting about the time she decided to run for the board. They have a policy that I can guarantee is not being followed and has not been followed for quite some time. I would also be willing to bet that the majority of the transports desert air has had were requests or were when the helicopter was unavailable.

There should be enough business for all the flights because patients need to be taken to see a doctor elsewhere. Have you here of the saying “No Pays.”

It appears you have not been following the hospital for very long. In 2008 On-Call and Directorships were canceled and the Hospital started to make money again. In late 2009 all the of the Directorships and On-Call were reinstated plus more and by 2011 we were going down hill again.
I know you do not want to believe that because of your doctor friend but it is true!
Canceling them would save the Hospital around 2 million dollars.

Did you go to the last meeting and hear our CFO tell the board and the public that if the hospital stay on its current path that the hospital will be broke? The CFO showed a chart where it had cash on hand. The chart showed the hospital cash supply steadily climbing from 2009 till the back end of 2010. From there it went downward at close to a 45 degree angle. Mrs Sartin and Mrs Hudson were not on the board at the time. If you want to blame board members then look no further than the previous board. They left one heck of a mess for the new board to clean up.

Reread the post and you will see that getting on call pay reductions was listed as part of the solution. A 20 to 30 percent cut there would bring back 400k to 600k. It still requires that we get the prison back. My question is why did the old board not address this issue personally? It is obvious the board needs to take the reins from our overpaid CEO and get the job done themselves in order to save the hospital. The CEO wants to take a chunk of what little money we have left and dump it into a helipad. Tells you that he has an agenda just like some of the board members that they will continue to push at any cost.

We all look at issues through different eyes.I feel three of the board members are headed in the right directions.Nothing will change until all of the law suits have gone to court and the truth is known.and who is doing all of the suing none other than your dear lord Dr.S.If he is out of here things will change.I pray constantly I or my family stays healthy and accident free.If I should have a major problem and have to go to the hospital I will not allow the hospital to admit me or family members.Yes my choice of transportion will be by helicopter.Again the (MEC.) IS the hospital's down fall.Sam I hope you will let the Holy Spirit lead you when making your decision.

@ save local jobs, If you voted for Sartin and Hudson you will be part of the reason our hospital closes. Sam is just going to vote the way he is told to by Sartin, Hudson, and Dr. S. Those 3 are MEC's puppets.

This is to Quitty and Catalina and Sam Burton, Wake up, this loss of our hospital rest clearly on your watch. We elected you to watch out for our resources and to improve our services. Clearly, that has not happened. I voted for Sartin and Hudson because I believe that they understand the problems and can move this hospital forward. Do not leave us without a hospital.

The pattern of Burton doing nothing in times of great disaster is well documented at the Palo Verde College. Not one time did he raise his hand and say where are we headed. We now live with that result- DEBT in the millions. Now he is doing the exact same thing to our local hospital. Listen to what your public wants and do it. We need a hospital and we must count on you to do what is best for all of us.

Your concerns with the spelling of your name is the heart of the matter. Open your heart to what is being said by your community members. I voted for you and you are making me very fearful that my family will not have the medical coverage needed to keep them safe. I plead with you to listen to the community and act accordingly. We are all one in Christ.
