Imperial runs over Jackets

BLYTHE - The Imperial Tigers put a damper on the Palo Verde Homecoming festivities Friday night, when Royce Freeman rushed for 216 yards and four touchdowns as the Jacket rivals from down south claimed a 62-7 win at Scott Stadium.

The loss ended the Jacket season with a winless record in Imperial Valley League play while posting a 3-7 record overall.

"We had a young team this year and most of them picked up some valuable experience this season," Jacket football coach George Dagnino said. "We had just nine seniors and three of them were hurt, so everyone got a chance."

The Jackets looked good in their initial possession of the contest as they converted three first downs and drove to the Imperial 26-yard line before a tipped pass was intercepted and returned to the Jacket 32.

From there, the Tigers took just five plays to put the first score on the board as Freeman did the honors from nine yards out.

While the Jacket offense struggled through the rest of the first quarter and early in the second, the Tigers put two more touchdowns on the board to take a 21-0 lead.

The next Jacket possession saw the locals take just three plays to go 72 yards for their lone score of the contest. A pair of KJ Bryant runs covered 19 yards and Andreas Cardenas broke loose on a 53-yard run for the touchdown.

Freeman responded with two more TD runs in the second quarter and opened the third with his fourth TD of the night as the Tigers never looked back.

"Freeman's the real deal," said Dagnino. "He's a good player and a good kid. My hope is that Imperial and Brawley both do well in the playoffs and bring some notice to the league."

Palo Verde's longest play from scrimmage came on the game's final play as Bryant and Jacket quarterback Ryan Galvan, combined on a 54-yard pass and run play that ended the contest.

It was Bryant's only reception of the night but the senior running back had perhaps his best effort of the season in the Jacket backfield as he gained 76 yards on 14 carries for the night.

Galvan finished the night with six completions on 20 attempts for 93 yards while suffering three interceptions.

Cardenas had three carries for 59 yards as the Jackets netted 124 yards on the night rushing but Cardenas did most of his work on the defensive side of the ball.

The senior linebacker had nine solo tackles on the night including four for losses and a sack. He also assisted on another tackle and recovered the only lost Tiger fumble on the night.

Alberto Loriero had six solos and a pair of assists while Rafael Adame also had six solo stops. Steven Valdez was good for five tackles including four solos while Gage Wright assisted on four tackles and had a solo stop.

Richard Henderson netted three solos and two assists while Majerle Salazar, Nick George, and Logan Whiting each had four tackles on the night.

"We were pleased that the guys all played hard to the end," said Dagnino.

"And we really appreciate the support of the parents, the fans, and alumni over the course of the season."

By the sound of it, it really sounds like PVUSD needs to get a NEW Athletic Director! I think that would take care of the problum.

Coach Dagnino- Defense! Defense! Defense!!! You can't allow 30 to 60 points a game. Imperial, Brawley, Calexico,Southwest, and El Centro will all be loaded again next year. Your team will be picked last! I know your going to try to make an easy schedule to take the heat off of you.But when league starts the same old story!!Come on recruit some coaches, help the program.

As soon as I finish posting this I am writing to the PVUSD School Board and voicing my complaints and concerns, If everyone who is disheartened with the coaching at PVHS please write to the Board and maybe if they get 1000 letters voicing complaints maybe, just maybe they will listen, but then again this is Blythe and most would just rather not go against the status-quo. I for one will NOT be silent anymore and will express my displeasure with what is going on with PVHS sports!

Like a wise man once said, "We finished in last place with you, and by God we'll finish in last place without you" Just something to think about.

Are you serious? It doesnt surprise me at all. Seems someones is gettin to big for there own pants. I was just told the other day when you give someone a higher position AD it could be good or it could be bad! The kids are the only ones who suffer from it. Seems like PVUSD made a bad hire on this one. To pick yourself for a head coaching position and be the AD is kinda funny but sounds about right. Im sure there will some kind of excuse, its called "ARROGANT" plan and simple. I wish PVUSD would wake up and smell the coffee. But as usual they will ignore the situation as usual. And in no way at anytime should a Coach or Coaches laugh about at a game its unexceptable. Truthfully It sounds like after reading all the comments its more than the laughing the people are talking about. Change is much needed for PV athletics I agree. Instead of complaining on here, parents should start writting letters to the Board Members maybe just maybe someone will step up and listen? Im sure Its not that hard to find replacement Coaches for our kids. That is there job right? To be in the kids best interest? A good Coach should know when its time to go!

OK, we'll all put in are applications for head football coach and I'm sure the A.D. will be happy to give up the extra money he makes and give it to.... well not himself! Yeah Right, that's REALLY GONNA HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!! Just because you live in Fantasyland doesn't mean tinkerbell is going to wave her magic wand and give the job to someone who might possibly do at least the same job,,, HELL, even I could coach the team to a 0-5 season. WAKE UP BLYTHE IT'S TIME TO GIVE THE TEAM TO SOMEONE ELSE, HOW MUCH WORSE A NEW COACH DO? I MEAN REALLY?!? Who do we have to petition to get this arrogant, self-righteous, know-it-all OUT? Give me the answer and I'll get the ball rolling and start that petition. ANYONE? ANYONE? BUELLER? BUELLER? ANYONE? ANYONE? hahaha

Back when I use to play Dagnino was a good coach and was into football but when I went to go watch the games this year I was shocked at what I was seeing! @pv fan saying I also saw coaches laughing and couldn't believe it! Dagnino needs to hang it up and just be the AD. And @ivan Aguayo sorry to say but the coaches don't do nothing but laugh when u lose so think before u write something next time.

OK- first of, when i go to watch the games, i see alot of people sittng and visiting with each other, and really not even paying attention to the game, in short- not too much enthusiasm from the fans. next thing, @P.V. Fan Saying-- who wants a new coach, " Hey if you think you or anyone else thinks that they can do better, well i am pretty sure that nobody is stopping you all from applying for the position. not much else we can do but to support the coaches that exist , they have a tough job as it is, the parents can also help by encouraging their kids benevolent.

And the head football coach is now going to be the head basketball coach....there were only several applicants for the position, but the "athletic director" was the one who choose the coach....himself! Gonna be another long season for those kids....some of the kids didn't even go out for basketball because they found out who was coaching....that speaks volumes.

Article comment by: What Defense??

@ Ivan.... The football team was 0-5!!!!! There is no defense! Defense wins championships and ball games, in general. No one would have reason to talk smack about defense, if there were any wins. Actions speak louder than words!

@ P.V. Fan Saying....
agree, agree, whole-heartedly agree. Your assessment of the situation is spot-on. Coaching Staff.... Where? I see NO coaches here, only adults who want the title of coach but do absolutely nothing to field the best players in the best positions. There are certain players are meant to play certain positions, Peyton Manning... Defensive Tackle, Ray Lewis... Quarterback, Adrian Petersen... Center, now I ask you would this line up of players in these positions create a winning team... probably not. Peyton Manning... Quarterback, Adrian Petersen... Runningback, Ray Lewis... Linebacker, Etc. you see? The best players in their optimum positions. PVHS coaches would choose the first team, because they are..... Well let's just say NOT coaches! But the word 'COACH' looks so good before their names. (deleted) I've tried talking to the High School Principal(s) for the last 3 years about the B.S. concerning these coaches they have no interest in doing anything about it, so get used to losing PVHS high school and Alumni the losing streak has just begun.
