BLYTHE - The Blythe City Council accepted a $5,000 donation from Smart & Final at their Oct. 23 meeting, as a thank you to the city for their work on relocating the store, which they have now put off due to environmental concerns.

Smart & Final had planned to relocate to the former Dekens Implements building on Commercial Street.

According to a city staff report, Smart & Final pulled out of the deal due to unfavorable findings resulting from the environmental review process.

Pat Barber, speaking for Smart & Final, said that the company had done an extensive amount of testing on the ground and that chemicals other than hydrocarbons had been found on the site, causing safety concerns for the food store. He said the company is also looking at other sites in the area, though he didn't say where.

"We definitely want to build a nicer, larger store than the one we have," Barber said.

As a means of thanking the city for the timely assistance provided to the company, Smart & Final offered $5,000 to be used for the charity or project of its choice, the staff report stated. The council accepted the gift and will decide at a future meeting how it will be spent.

In July the council approved a conditional use permit (CUP) for the new location at 135 N. Commercial Street. The 27,979 square foot store was bordered by Commercial Street to the east, Murphy to the north, Hobsonway to the south and Ash to the west.

Store officials, at the time, said that Smart & Final has operated a market in Blythe since 1971 and had been looking to expand for some time now, having checked out multiple locations before settling on the Commercial Street site.

The store was expected to open on Nov. 15.

Store officials, at the time, said that Smart & Final has operated a market in Blythe since 1971.

I find the above statement from the article very misleading, as I moved to Blythe in 1959 and left sometime in 1969, and there was a Smart & Final there during all of that time? What am I missing in this statement?

Just because S & F isn't getting a new building right away, you can still shop there. And if there is something they don't carry that you would like to have, suggest it.
