TIMES ENDORSEMENT: The community needs to unite behind Jim Carney and Rosalie Carlton

Lately Blythe residents seem to have no solutions to the problems they face with local governments.

As in many smaller communities, people form into two distinct factions - those in power and those whom want to be in power.

Neither is willing to compromise nor concede, and caught in the middle are the local residents who only want a return on their tax dollar - safe and clean neighborhoods, quality education for their children, and affordable medical care when they need it.

For most of the past decade, Palo Verde Hospital has been a major source of division in the community. And that divide, despite the efforts of some of Blythe's most caring residents, continues to devolve, affecting more and more of the populace and even infecting other local government agencies.

Misinformation and disinformation have become the standard in our local elections and the stench is beyond nauseating. Alliances don't always seek what's best for the community but rather to maintain or gain control of a board or council.

While all the drama may be a bonanza for us in the newspaper business, it's not necessarily a good thing for the town or the people who live and raise their families here, most of whom have no involvement in civic affairs. And yet these ordinary people must decide who will represent us on the city council, the school board, the college board and the hospital board... and then live with the consequences.

It's not always an easy choice when you don't know the candidates personally and your information consists of one-line slogans and repeated fictions.

On Nov. 6, the voters of Blythe must choose among four candidates for the Palo Verde Healthcare District Board. Since two of the candidates have teamed up openly and are campaigning together, by default, the other two are now a team and that has narrowed the voters' options to two choices, the incumbents or the challengers.

Palo Verde Valley Times believes the incumbents, Jim Carney and Rosalie Carlton, are the clear choice to continue representing the Palo Verde Valley on the Healthcare District Board.

Carney has served four years as president of the board and the hospital is in a far better place then it was when voters elected him.

At that time the disruptive behavior of members of the Medical Executive Committee (MEC) made weekly headlines comparable to those we see out of Quartzsite. The chaos at the hospital gave the entire town a black eye and the hospital has yet to overcome its rampageous reputation.

Carney made best efforts to subdue the circus and appease the MEC, but like so many board members who tried before him, things soured quickly and he eventually became an outcast with the medical clique whose motives he questioned.

And motive should be the most important dynamic voters need to understand before casting a ballot. If only voters could know the truth behind the candidacy of so many of our elected officials, we might not be in the dire straits we are in today.

Since his brief flirtation with the special interests that want control of Palo Verde Hospital, Carney has made the welfare of the community his sole priority. A retired Riverside County Sheriff's captain, Carney has no financial interest in the hospital and doesn't depend on it in any way for his livelihood.

The only motive we can ascertain is his desire to provide quality patient care to valley residents, striving to bring in the best talent available - despite the efforts of others to stop him.

It's as important as well that Carlton remain on the board. She has no business interest in the hospital, she has worked hard to understand the complicated issues facing the Healthcare District Board, and her heart is with the local community.

Both Carlton and Carney have run clean campaigns, neither boasting of their grand abilities nor badmouthing their opponents, a welcome change for many of us who have grown weary of the hate.

The biggest problem with our current system is that general practitioners can practice medicine at the hospital only if the MEC grants them privileges.

Imagine if a new gas station wanted to open in town but could do so only with the permission of the gas stations already located in town. Do you think any new gas stations would be able to open here? That's the battle Carney and Carlton have faced since taking office - and yet the other side doesn't even view it as an issue.

The Palo Verde Valley Times has been fighting to change this practice for the past decade and will continue to fight for new doctors. The Times urges local voters to retain Jim Carney and Rosalie Carlton as members of the Palo Verde Valley Healthcare District. Things need to change at Palo Verde Hospital and Carney and Carlton have been making positive changes. Let's stick with what's working and not return to what hasn't worked in the past.

Article comment by: Former PVH Employee

So to whoever wins, I wish you the best of luck.
As I see it, you have your hands full figuring out:

How does the CEO at the hospital, make more money than BOTH Wardens at the Prison Combined?

Why are PVH supervisors and managers at the hospital not held responsible when their areas and employees under perform?

Why are employees promoted instead of disciplined after they are accused of Sexual Harassment, Unethical behavior, or HIPPA violations?

Why do the prisons transport their inmates hundreds of miles daily, instead of using the local hospital, taking money out of the local community?

Why are a majority of PVH staff contract personnel, with no ties to the community?

Why do local nurses and clerical workers choose to work at out of town hospitals in the Coachella Valley or Parker, or choose to work at the prison, instead of working at PVH?

Why do the local nursing students not get any training at PVH?

Why do local residents travel to out of town hospitals to get services that are offered at PVH?

Why is morale so bad at PVH?

Once again, good luck.

Thank you to my Dr P.
I read your letter with Dr Brook.
Me and my family will do all we can to help you and all the people both of you wonderful doctors take care of. I've been on the phone all morning calling everyone I can contact. Things must be in bad shape for you to get involved.
I had to chuckle when someone commented about your signature I would recongize your name anywhere.
thank you Doctor P. I'm getting the word out. Everyone I spoke with at church commented what a nice letter you two wrote.Good information.
God bless you both.

"If the doctors names were not forged", that was you right? Well I only threw Dr. Brooks name out there because I know him to be a man of his word. Dr. P I do not know so I will not say something that I do not know if it is true. That what responsible people do, they stick to what they know to be true. Just because your heart tells you it is tru does not make it true. I prefer my facts to be based on tangible evidence, which allows one to have a much better argument. Reality many times get blurred when you allow emotion to become involved. That must be why you support C&C and why you can not see that they are taking the hospital down a road to bankruptcy. Think about it with your head and not your heart.

I'm glad that the Hospital was able to finally clear it up for me by letter I received. Nice that Dr. P and Dr. Brooks took the time to break it down to those of us not in the medical field. I pray for our community and want us lifted out of this darkness that we are in. Thank you, now I no how to vote.

Lets go back to the 2010 election.Do you recall a flier circulating through the community with different signature on it .Dr.Brooks was one of the names. He then made up a flier denying ever signing it .He was seen by different people in the parking lot at the Catholic Church placing those on every vehicle. He then offered it to the times to be made public. So with that, why would I or any body else not consider that possible again.you were quick to throw his name out there. His name was not mentioned in my comment.you failed to commend Dr.P.does that mean you don't feel him to be honest and straight up.show me in my comment where I accused any one of forgery.I don't see but one other initial there and I have to assume that is Sandy Hudson you say the candidate.I am accusing.just letting you know Every comment I've had posted here is true because it comes from the heart.Any thing coming from the heart is true weather it be bad or good..Oh I almost forgot to thank you for giving me the title of resident comedian bad thing is no money when it's volunteered .happy to see you have a good sense of humor and can laugh.I got kick out your comment to.

It is clear to me that with all of the experts on the hospital that it should be a world class facility. Not the case, all the arm chair quarterbacks in Blythe need to step up and out and get on over there and solve all of the problems. We need you. If you cannot see what jim Carney has done to our Schools and Now to the Hospital, then you need to see another Doctor, Tim Port.

Do you have any proof to back up your claims? The ceo is the only person that can make the decision to fire employees at the hospital. When I say proof I do not mean "someone told me" or "I heard". The nurses that are campaigning with hudson and sartin are the ones currently working at the hospital. The same nurses that Jim "the hospital is on the right track" Carney and Rosalie " it takes so much out of him" Carlton led board cut the hours of! You have lots of doctors, nurses and other staff supporting them. I bet the ones supporting C&C are the overpaid management at the hospital. I am sure our over half million dollar ceo, that just keeps getting raises, is supporting jim and rosalie. No one wants to lose their money bags.

@Just me and have you seen it!
Were the nurses that were going door to door the same nurses that she had removed from the hospital? Board members can only remove the CEO. But that was never the case when she and (deleted). were running the board. Sandy please tell us where all the local nurses went?

The two of you should get together and write some books. You are both great storytellers and have some vivid imaginations. Just keep throwing out your web of lies and disinformation. The people of this great town were not born yesterday. Dr. Brooks has always been a good straight forward man that says it how he sees it. Accusations of forgery and accusing candidates of sending a flier without their names attached to it, give it a break. Quit pulling things out of thin air, it does not do your candidates any good. Try having a factual argument for once. Your post should be put in the fiction section of the library. If the nurses really were hurt by Sandy then why are they going door to door campaigning for her and Trina? I am sure we will get another factless response from the resident comedian "just me"

Yes I put it in the garbage .Because I feel that is what it is.If the doctors names are not forged (deleted) .And he wasn't in favor of the one candidate and not in favor of the awesome so called surgeon.I was told this flyer was sent out illegally. So looks like maybe another lawsuit in the making .This also aids in the hospital loosing money.Sandy is responsible for the nurses getting their hours cut and loosing their jobs. She was on the board when she felt travel nurses would best serve the hospital.all the local nurses where fired out of the ER.oh that awesome she did so good for the hospital.

@BANKRUPT SOUL: President Bush had a DUI and possession of cocaine that were expunged and still served two terms. What's your point? So if someone (speaking of anyone) was a good servant of Blythe for years, went through a divorce, and had to file bankruptcy they are not allowed to help Blythe? People can only help the community with good credit? What a joke and why people dislike biased reporting. Whoever wins good luck. Blythe already has a bad reputation. Why would the PVVT reinforce that reputation with all the negative news? Have all the negative news you want but at least have the same amount of positive/informative news. Blythe is all drugs, sexual assaults, arrests, and adults fighting, or what? SMH......
