HEALTHCARE DISTRICT ELECTION: Hudson claims hospital is losing millions

Marty Bachman

BLYTHE - Sandy Hudson served on the Palo Verde Healthcare District Board from 2008 to 2010, until she was defeated in the November 2010 election. According to Hudson, the hospital was $10 million in the black when she was voted out of office and was about to order a new X-ray machine to replace one that is today, 40 years old.

"I am gravely concerned about the direction (the hospital) it's going," Hudson said. "The loss of $5 million in less than two years."

Hudson didn't produce financial records to support her claim and stated that the September figures had yet to be released. She said that the loss of the prison business was due to the hospital not responding to their needs.

"There's only one reason they're not releasing the September financials," Hudson said. "They're not favorable."

Hudson said there was a lack of confidence in the community with the hospital and that residents were not happy with care in the emergency room.

"They talk about it a lot," she said. "The wait times... just people complain all day long."

Hudson said that emergency room personnel were not receptive to patient needs and that quality care was suffering. She was also critical of the dated equipment, including the X-ray machine, which she said makes it hard for doctors to make a diagnosis. She said that the board was about to approve new X-ray equipment just prior to her leaving the board. She said that without any corporate sponsor, as the hospital has operated under in the past, there were no longer any deep pockets to keep the facility open, which forces it now to stand up on its own.

"It lives and dies by what it brings in," she said. "I'm going to do the same thing I did when it made $10 million. I'm going to work with the parties involved to make sure that we make progress going forward and they all work together. You don't make $10 million by not working together. If it was possible two years ago it's possible now. We're gong to have to do something to turn that emergency room around and we're going to have to something to update the equipment."

Hudson said the hospital had a digital mammogram on line for purchase but that other area hospitals, including Parker, have had the same equipment for at least five years. She said that the hospital never purchased the X-ray equipment because they used the money for the CEO's contract.

"We're behind on all that equipment," she said. "The technology has changed tremendously and we have not, as the hospital, put the money into replacing and updating the equipment... and it shows."

Hudson said that part of her plan to restore fiscal health to the hospital would be to meet and work with prison officials to bring their business back by taking care of their needs. She also said that the emergency room operation would go out for competitive bidding, with the board demanding improved certification.

"I'm going to try to rebuild public confidence," she said. "I think people are aware of what's happening now. They're aware of the lack of progress. The proof is in the pudding. Jim Carney has been on that board for four years. He spent two with me and it made $10 million. He and Rosalie have been on there two years without me and it lost $5 million. I think I have the ability to bring people together in a fashion that they don't."

" It accuses Sahlolbei and Pars of violating the Federal Anti-Kickback Statute, the California Welfare and Institutions Code, which is a California anti-kickback statute applicable to Medi-Cal fraud, and the California Business and Professions Code, which makes it unlawful for a physician to offer rebates, refunds, compensation, etc."
These may also have criminal consequences!!!

Talk Carney and Carlton down all you want to, you have that right .But it doesn't change any thing.Just like Sandy and Trina isn't going to make a big change either..Hudson talks how she can bring the prison back. What if the prison doesn't want to come back.Trina asking local nurses that was fired if they would come back to pvh.She forgets her running mate is the one that helped fire them..How little can a person be that is personally asking people for the vote ...Now how can she think the same people that voted her out vote her back in..The open house was not set up by the board I know for a fact a concerned citizen met with the ceo and requested the open house..To just see the new equipment. And no Hudson wasn't apart of it..I was at a board meeting where she was claiming $10 mil was in the bank and the cfo gave his report and it was 8mil ..that proved to me she is not trustworthy..So you vote for who like and I will vote for who I feel will best benifit the hospital. And God be with us.

Carney and Carlton do keep giving the CEO and CFO raises every year. DO you people on here not read anything. The CEO and CFO have performance evaluations every year and their raises are based on the scores the board gives them ranging from 0 to 2. They have given them a 2 the last two years. This gives them a 6 percent raise on their current salary (meaning that 6 percent compounds). Plus come to find out they are also given bonuses. Go ask the hospital for the facts of total compensation and I bet you will get stonewalled. Funny that right before the election they have an open house. How much of that equipment was actually approved for purchase with the past board. You will also find that it was bought on credit.

I trust Carney and Carlton ...I will vote for them for that reason...The hospital is having open house..Lets be sure to go and look at the new equipment they have purchased..I agree ceo is making more than he should.I don't feel he needs another pay raise...But Sandy and Trina cant change what is already there..If they win this hospital will be a total nightmare.Sandy was and still is a big part of the hospital problems. She needs to attend, along with the Dr she is so stuck on, anger management classes I saw her at a board meeting behaving like a non professional. Her behavior is just like the MEC Dr..We don't need of that kind at the hospital

It does not appear as though it would be in the best intrest of Palo Verde Valley Hospital to allow a position to be filled by Hudson. The main concern here is giving the patient the attention and care they need. You can built a whole new hospital, equip it with all the new technology equipment but if you do not have employees who are genuinely concerned and compassionate about the care of it's patients needs you would have invested in vain. Regarding the monetary aspect of this very sensitive issue, where and how are monies truthfully spent? One would have to sit at the desk of the person filing for insurance payments, are we getting paid for services rendered? What exactly is the problem with money management here? and Why? If we at Palo Verde Hospital were to sit at the table and bring out all and any documents showing the exact amount of money brought in and monies paid out , where would we genuinely stand? "Focus"

They are losing millions of dollars a year based on their own latest releases financial report (http://paloverdehospital.org/archives/42/2012.08.29_Agenda%20Package.pdf), they did not release September report. How do they intend to pay for these promise lands Carney and Carlton are fooling you with? I forgot, just like all other equipments they said the Hospital got, we put it on the credit card because we need the cash for the CEO salary of 1/2 million dollars. Do you get it now? Sartin and Hudson know that you need to spend money on the Hospital rather than the CEO to provide better care.

You noticed her main concern is money..No concern mentioned about patient care. She and her running mate have yet to state how and what they are going to do to make all these changes...Carney and Carlton have both spoke of the new equipment and the improvement's made and their goals are to continue with improvements. All ready the Er is better doctors are better .Be smart and re elect Carney and carlton..Yes she does have a temper like a two year old I saw it therefore I can say it..

It's not Sandra Hudson winning a seat on the Hospital Board that scares me. It's her (deleted) reactions that will again show themselves if she loses. Acting like "a (deleted) from losing the last election, she stormed into the hospital lobby and removed several plants and planters that she had donated just a few months previous. She played intimidation games by holding her cell phone up to Board members just few feet away during the meetings and video-taped the public sessions. She called accusations that she was responsible for the inflammatory and libelous "Watchdog" flyer as being "outright lies" but offered up no other parties that could have produced it. She was a less-than-gracious loser but the thought of her striding down the halls as Dr. Sahlolbie's political tool is even more frightening.

Can Ms. Hudson speak on her own defense regarding her signing off on (deleted) purchase of $1,800 worth of interior blinds for the "Quiet Room" in the hospital when employed there. She signed off on the requisition - as a Board member, no less - on which (deleted) bought said blinds from her own business - (deleted) Did a Grand Jury ever investigate this one? If not, one should.

You know, we have Presidential and Vice-Presidential debates for the public to see and hear candidates. I've not heard of anything like this happening here. Maybe not a debate, but at least hearing and seeing all candidates. I guess we just have to make decisions just on hear-say again. No wonder we make lousy choices. Let's get it going. See how they act under some pressure. Could be relevant and revealing. Or maybe some candidates don't want that.

How come she didn't order an X-ray machine when she was on the Board two years ago and had $10 million? Wasn't it close to 40 years old then too?
