COLUMN: Not 'Correct'
Bob Weete
Columnist

There is absolutely nothing I can say that will "please" everybody. I've known that from the beginning. Frankly, I do not intentionally try to please. I try to share an opinion for discussion. If I really tried to please everyone, I would really go off the deep end. Too many individual opinions.

That is one of the things that used to distinguish America from literally every other country in the world. Our founding fathers set it up deliberately that way. And, I say again, much to the chagrin of the anonymouses (or is it anonymii?), our ancestors also held tight to the notion that God's love would permeate this country and would also cause people to use some discretion when disagreeing.

This is long gone, I know. We used to have freedom of speech; gone. We used to have freedom of religion; gone. We used to have freedom of press; gone. We used to have freedom of assembly; gone. Well, that depends on who you are and your connections.

Oh, yes, we are free in the sense that we can think what we want, and we can say what we want, if we express it inside of our own minds, or inside our own group. We can expect that those who don't see it the same way as we do may express themselves, too. Vociferously.

However, it has been my experience in my weekly expression of my personal opinion that it is merely open season for not exactly discussing or debating positions, but simply out-and-out personal attack. I taught school for 41 1/2 years, so I am relatively tough. At first, the vehemence did, indeed, hurt my feelings, but it does not really bother me, personally, anymore.

The teacher that still lives in me, however, is very sad for these people who spend their time reading my columns and then feel compelled to condemn me and my opinion. I am merely writing my opinion; I am not writing a thesis, and footnotes are not required. It's sad that they have not learned that if they want to attempt to change my position, then it might be prudent for them to counteract my statements by giving "facts" or "opinions" of their own to justify their own positions on the topic at hand.

Surprisingly, I have been very pleased to frequently run into people who take the time to let me know they read and agree with me. In some cases, they have been people I don't know. Thank God for them, or I might be inclined to be depressed.

So, the upshot is that there might be more people who would feel free to express themselves openly, were it not for the self-appointed judges who determine what is a politically correct view. Of course, any statement that doesn't follow the party line is therefore, written by a demented old man.

No wonder I get nostalgic for the olden days before respect and responsibility went out of style.

Every time I freely express my spiritual beliefs in this free country, I am also taken to task, in an attempt to get me to shut up about that. If you are a non-believer, that is your business, but if we do really have freedom of speech/press, then why do you feel it is your right to denigrate me or others for expressing spirituality ourselves? What is the harm? Just that it "offends" you? Gosh, I'm sorry. But your constant persecution of people whose beliefs are shared "offend" us, too. Why don't we live and let live? Oh, yeah, the rule of political correctness trumps American ideals. Dang! I just never will get that right.

I just don't get it. These self-styled critics rail at me because they say I need to quit watching Fox News. How do they know I watch Fox News, unless they, themselves, watch a lot of Fox News in order to know my TV habits?

I used to watch CNN. Yes, I did. But you know what? I found I didn't care for their reporting, so I stopped watching CNN. I don't punish myself by watching something I don't want to watch. Seems sensible to me. So I wonder why these people watch so much Fox News if they don't like what they have to say. And, I also don't understand why they bother reading my columns if they clearly don't like what I say.

And the references made to my age are really devastating to me. Oh, I cry each time they say those hurtful things. Reminds me of my own childhood, when kids called other kids names. We used to say, "Sticks and stones" You know. I still follow that solution.

Another sad part of it is that some of these people actually sound like they may even be fairly intelligent, but they have simply let their emotions control them. "Just do it" and "Just say it" has taken the place of so many practices of the "olden days". The freedoms were actually free - up to the point where practicing our own freedoms denied the expression of freedom on the part of someone else.

Political correctness, along with hatred, ought to go the way of the crank wringer on a washing machine and let relative peace return.

To those liberals that care about underage girls getting pregnant...a teacher can recommend an abortion clinic without notifying her parents or the police. She could have been inpregnated by a teacher or another adult but for Christ's sake don't let another student give her an asprine.

@R U SERIOUS. I'm not Pro Abortion but you have to live in the real world. You have to abide by the laws that are on the books. Also you have to allow exceptions. If the law ever go's the other way. What you say about the Romney and Ryan team is not true. The other side twisted it to state their war on women. Just scare tactics on the uninformed women. The Democrats hate the rich. But killing unborn babies is a money making machine for the Democrats and their friends. That they use some of that money on election years. If you (They) want to play 50 shades of gray. Things go wrong then they have to pay out of their own pockets, and not out of the pockets of the tax payers. Funny no one ever mentions the father on abortions. If he wants the mother to kill the fetus, or if he wants to be a father. Where are his rights in all of this. If the shoe was in the other foot. The mother wanted the baby to live and the father did not. He would still be responsible for caring of that child until the age of 18 years. That is why I say that both parties should be held responsible for the upbringing of that child and not the tax payers. Every year thousands of people go out of country to adopt a child, so why not put it up for adoption. But the would mean 9 months of NO PARTY TIME.

So, Pica. You are pro-abortion. I was unaware. Romney & Ryan will change the law. For Ryan there are no exceptions. He co-sponsored a personhood bill that would grant rights to a fertilized egg. And rape is a "method of conception". Listen to him say it. His co-sponsor, Todd Akin claimed women don't get pregnant from a "legitimate" rape. The GOP is dangerously backward.

@R U Serious. Now you are talking from both ends. If a female is raped, or a case of incest or if she is too young and or her life is in danger, and of course the mentally handicap that can be taken advantage of. About anything where the female is not at fault. But if she throws all caution to the wind and it's party time with different partners every-time and still does not practice safe sex. I disagree with her having an abortion. But it's her body and life and she can do anything she wants with it. But the last thing I want, is to have the tax payers pay for an abortion or support a welfare baby and that baby's, babies for generations. I think it's you that should wake up and see the real world. I see most of the news outlets not just Fox. I read other news papers not just Blythe's. Just look around town just before the New Year you have a lot of births and the same go's mid year when it's cold they bundle up together for warmth and when it's hot they take it off and in the end you have little joey or sally. Both men and females, can't care for that child, they still refuse to practice safe sex. It's these type of people that I refuse to support with tax payer money. It's like the criminal if you do the crime, then you can do the time. Responsibility rest upon all.

@pica. Just giving you food for thought. Waste of time & energy I see. Those who get their info from Fox, Beck, Rush &the like live in a different world. You want to criminalize women who choose. How about the 10 yr old impregnated with twins? How much prison time should she serve if she's able to secure an abortion and save her life? Paul Ryan calls rape a method of conception. Part of the GOP war on women. "Wake the blank up.

The Bible tells us that "the poor you will always have with you." It is the job of the hungry and homeless to provide an avenue for the religious among us to do good works. The hunger pangs of children and the bone-chilling cold of the street people are the instruments of a loving God to give the righteous the keys to heaven.

@Pica Bill Maher coined the term. Google it. It's the only excuse for saying Obama's economy is worse than Bush's when the stock market has doubled since Obama took over. It's the excuse for the unemployment rate when the Obama administration stopped Bush's freefall into joblessness. A million jobs related to the auto industry alone were saved. It would be even better if the GOP hadn't obstructed his jobs bill along with everything else. Samuel L Jackson's message is for you. "Wake the ( ) up!"

@Crazy T. Now people hate the poor rich man. He is not my cup of tea. But at least he told the truth. That is one thing. I like about the GOP. If they are going to shrew you, they will not cherry coat it. Not like Obamy that whispers sweet nothings in your ear. Because once he wins he will not need that 47% of the people that do not pay taxes. They Illegals they can kiss the U.S. Goodbye. Grandma and Grandpa will be turned into Soylent Green Crackers to feed that 47%. In the end Obama will see that he made a mistake and go straight again. Look if it's legal to use all of the deduction on the book when paying your taxes and you are not breaking the law, then use them. You think that your side does not use them? If it's within the law, who cares.

@crazytown~You just proved my point with your non-factual hatefilled rant. I'll give you a couple facts if you can't bother to google and read them yourself.

GWB lied to us and started an illegal war that cost us thousands of lives and trillions that he didn't put on the books...Obama brought our troops home and added the war to our deficit, where it belongs.

GM is alive and OBL is dead. A man Bush didn't even bother to look for. These wars are profitable for rich people, and I'm not talking rich like Fisher Ranch, I'm talking rich like the Koch bros and Morgan Stanley. These guys doubled their money in the last 12 yrs.

That's a start and when I have more time, I will post more but I feel like I'm wasting my time since I've a feeling you are just trying to poke a bear. I'm not a bear, I care about my country, my town, and my fellow citizens. I pray for us no matter who wins. That's the difference, I want whoever wins to succeed.

El Pica, do you not think that sort of thing happens on the other side? Conservatives are just sneakier, they do it with voter suppression and intimidation. Like saying the 47% don't matter is to tell them they are so low even the Presidential candidate doesn't care about them. Frankly that is the most honest I have ever heard Mitt Romney talk. That should matter to you and I don't see why it doesn't.

Listen, I know there is corruption among welfare recipients, I have family members who screw the system, it's not right, and I'm not saying it is. There are others however, and they are the ones that matter to me. I am not part of the 47%, I pay thousands in personal income taxes every year. I don't cheat and I only claim what the IRS says I can. My republican parents do cheat though and they are liars and biggots. I'll stay over here, thank you.

@tanya~Sounds like a plan. The best part is that California is blue so the rest can get the heck out. BYE.
