COLUMN: Get informed
Bob Weete

Like many of you, I hope, I watched the Republican Convention in Tampa last week, and, like many of you, I hope, I will be watching the Democratic Convention this week.

Naturally, since it is clear that I espouse the general philosophy of the Republican Party, I was uplifted and more hopeful than I may have been. That is one of the purposes of these conventions; they are pep rallies, much like the ones we had in school each Friday. We loved our teams, and we wanted them to win their games.

This week the Democrats have their pep rally, with speakers, confetti, bands, signs and all of the whoopla that goes with the tradition of elections. Even if you did not watch last week's cheerleaders, I encourage all to watch the one this week.

Why? Because everybody really needs to be better informed so we can be wiser in the casting of our votes. It is a bit strange, though, that in spite of the vast amounts of communication possibilities, it is still very difficult to really know the people we believe will best serve our nation in these difficult times.

Politics in modern times has really become more sophisticated technologically, and this has made it even more difficult for us, the voters, to make sound, reasonable decisions rather than base them on emotions or hearsay. It is a task, however, that we all must take very seriously. These decisions are among the most important ones of our lives, and there are, indeed, consequences, as in any decisions we make, big or small.

We make decisions every day of our lives, and those decisions determine the paths our lives will take, either good or bad. We decide who to marry, what profession to enter, where to live, whether to try drugs, to drink and then drive, and so on.

It is, then, incumbent upon us to reason things the best we can, including considering realistically the potential consequences as a result of a particular decision. There are always consequences; sometimes good, and sometimes bad. When we make bad decisions, and we all do from time to time, that happens so that we may learn something good from it. Doesn't do to just say, "Oops" and then go on doing the same thing.

This is where I say, which I have said many times before: "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you always got." We have no one else to blame but ourselves if we keep doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results.

We must expose ourselves to a variety of pieces of information and educate ourselves. When I was Director of Activities at the high school, I tried to get the student candidates to say something more than, "Vote for me for better student government". That was one of my failures, but I kept trying. Students complained about it just being a popularity contest, yet they were afraid to step out of the "norm" and commit to something.

On the adult level, it's now a bit different. The signs say, "My opponent poured lighter fluid on cats' tails and then set fire to them to watch them run." Or worse. We (both sides) spend an inordinate amount of time (and millions of dollars, by the way), on nit-picking drawing our attention away from the real information we need to have our reason over-turn emotion.

We need to have information (facts, of course) relevant to a candidate's background, experience, philosophy, intentions, character and all of that stuff. Without the prevalence of "bloviating." Yes, a Bill O'Reilly's term, but it works here. All candidates - local to national - do this, so we must be on the look-out and see it for what it is. We need to know what, exactly, they have done to convince us they are capable of doing what they promise, and to earn our respect and our vote.

We have some elections coming up locally, too. And, "If we do what we've always done" we'll get the same results that we hear so many complaints about. We must have some means to determine who is real and who isn't. The people with the most signs that say "Vote for me" and nothing more, all that means is they've got a Daddy Big Bucks, financing them and that is truly scary. We need to have a public forum or some way that all voters in Blythe have a chance to hear them actually say something. Going the route where "My sister-in-law said that her mailman said Candidate A is a cool dude" determines who we vote for just keeps getting what we always get.

I know, they have someone prepare a blurb to go in the Times, but, again, that's "the way we've always done it". How has that worked for us so far, in City Council, School Board, College Board, and Hospital Board elections?

So, the crucial time is coming for getting real about our right - and responsibility - to vote, and vote with responsible information intelligently applied. "Just do it", as the saying goes.

Anyone but me know what a lip service christian is? Its them folks who talk about how christian and righteous they are, how much they believe in charity, kindness but its all lip service, hollow, empty! If the democrat party is so truly racist, xenophobic as some on the far right wing claim then why does over 90% of the black vote democrat, and now the once 40% hispanic vote which Bush Jr won with going away and going democrat? A old and funny saying comes to mind you can fool some of the people all the time but you cannot fool all the people all the time! The funniest republicans to me are them black ones, brown ones, yelllow ones etc., them gay log cabin republicans, the grand old party of Lincoln once was the abolistionist party, but today they are owned by them angry dixiecrats, who are not leaving, they are evicting! They have their token non-white members for show, even have them some abominations before god whom they like only come election time and then they tell them get thee back into thy closet and don't tell! I am so amused at how some will join a party whom the elite deem them house servants and abomination before god!

your words "Yes for many decades democrats had the unsavory history of having them angry, segregationist KKK folks,..." NO for hundreds of years - not decades. Dems are still haters - believe in aborting 9 month fetusus - that would be murder don't like the word god - talk about hateful? dems won't pay for their own childrens education - no saving to pay - no they let their children get the handout - let everyone else pay for my child, while I drive around in my mercedes! Dems are crooks - act like they are the ones who care, but look behind the front door and see who actually takes care of their families and see who actually takes from every body else instead of getting a job and contributing to society. Do they pay anything to charity??? NO. Their children are worthless and believe they are entitled to something they haven't worked for. I'd rather be an honest, hardworking republican than a taker dumbocrat any day

I think this election will come and go, I have seen many in my multiple decades of life, and truly cannot be upset at any of them, during FDR's time the right was angry, upset that their hero Herbert Hoover's ideology of let the free market fixt it failed, left us in almost a decade of human misery for the 98%! The 2% mostly profited as they do, don't envy the rich they have a burden or curse they will have to unload or end in a very hot spot for all eternity! I am thankful for my middle class status, twice retired, once military, once private, don't envy anyone else, am to busy trying to pluck that timber from my eye to worry about the splinter in anyone elses eye! What political party cries whines 24/7 about their money, their love of their money, and denigrate the poor, hungry, the naked the sick and those in prison, call the poor lazy, the unemployed lazy, the elderly lazy shame on them for their poverty, unemployment and being worn out, love of money is truly the root of all evil! Vote for whom ever you like, me I will choose the lesser of two evils!

EL PICAS BUYAS, Walt Sleptke, @walt sleptke, @Walt Sleptke, @El Pica, Dems are racist haters, @Anonymous Anonymous, do you really truly think that going under all them alias your truly legion? One thing I have found so funny about the internet is them folks who play that game of pretending to have legions of followers, folks who agree with them but they fail to realize one can type any number of internet handles but one can rarely find a truly multiple personality who can hide the one thing they are obsessed with in their rants! Sorry you can create a dozen internet handles and I will stick to my one! Your angry, obviously a type A personality and me I am type B, sorry for you, since type A tend to have premature cardiac arrests, me I am not worried on who wins in Nov., if I can live through Nixon, Reagan 2 Bushes I think I can survive a Romney!

Danielle Smith did you ever read any history books? Ku Klux Klan was formed by 6 angry confederate soldiers, yes democrats for decades had them amongst their ranks, but alas in 1960's angry at desegregation, doing away with their JIm Crow voting laws on education test, poll tax they left the democrat party in droves! Where did they go? To the welcoming arms of their new home, republican party hence the word "dixiecrats came about", Strom Thurmond was one of their most reknowned memebers who formerly was a democrat, before you get to exicted about democrat senator Byrd, a klan recuiter he denounced his klan ways, views, Thurmond never did! He died a segregationist! You can have any opinion you like but you will never be able to coin your own facts, real historians write history the cyber peanut gallery will fade in about 48 hours after they rant into cyber space nothingness! I doubt you look often in any mirrors you might not like what you see much like the Queen in the fairy tale mirror mirror on the wall whose the fairest of them all!

Distractions, distractions because you have nothing to run on - Obamacare??? what a joke FastNFurious?, really. Typical dumocrats - don't talk about the reality of america going off a cliff because of FAILING POLICY - get everybody to look over there while u stab us in the back. Talk about everything under the sun except for the failing obamacare & what it will do to business people and average american workers.

I do love the wanna-be historians who swear they know history of Ku Klux Klan but fail to mention how in 1960's in anger and desperation most of them became republicans, hence the NIxon southern strategy evolved! Strom Thurmond a once die hard segregationist democrat ended his days as a unreconstructed segregationist whom lost his 1948 bid as a democrat presidential candidate! Yes for many decades democrats had the unsavory history of having them angry, segregationist KKK folks, we got tired of them and gave them choices, either go to their corner for a time out and keep their xenophbia to themselves or leave, the majority got angry like a child and left and hence went where they felt at home the republican party! Who today have learned to rue the day they took these unhappy miserable folks into their party, they are not leaving they are evicting their moderate adoptive family!

The rich include all parties (dems/reps) - look at all the hollywood folks who are 1%'ers - they stand up & say "we need to pay more taxes" - Well reality is - Hollywood actors (dumocrats) don't pay taxes at all - they don't give to charity either. That's why they are always saying - we should give more. Hollywood folks need to fire their million $ accountants & pay tax on ALL their income instead of finding loopholes & tax breaks. Pelosi, Reid, Kerry are the richest dems - they find a way to cheat the american people. Kerry parks his yacht in a state where he doesn't pay state tax - hello does anybody realize Kerry is as wealthy or more than Romney? He is a tax cheat. Pelosi gets more wealthy each year from INSIDER TRADING - hello & u think wall street is corrupt??? Business owners earn income, pay taxes on that income, provide millions of jobs & revenue for families which create more jobs and revenue. Business owners pay tax on interest earned (2nd tax) from investments & give millions to charity. The problem is that OBAMA & DEMS DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT BUSINESS, ARE GREEDY, SELFISH & HYPOCRITS!! A robust business economy IS THE ONLY thing that will help america. Dems hate successful business people, they are envious & jealous dems chose the liberal arts, bongo & dance lessons while in college, not the MBA classes that lead to CEO ability. Business is what made america great & anyone who thinks a successful business is bad are probably democrats. Most business people are republican - wake up & get on the SMART side of the fence.

I am going to vote for who I think has my best interest at heart, not by Republican or Democrat. Try renting the movie "Truman" from Netflix. It's about President Truman. Gives you a whole new opinion on what it's really like to have a real heart for the people and how it's just not that easy to accomplish that objeective. To all of you closet politicians out yourselves. Meet at Starbucks over coffee and have your debates over party lines or..... better yet, run for school board, city council, hospital board. Well, you get the picture!

Article comment by: Dems are the racist haters

Democrats are the haters, most racist, selfish bunch in America. Everyone forgets that the dems are the owners of the KKK, Alabama's George Wallace, and against the civil rights act. Has everyone forgotten the racist democrats of the 60's and early 70's?? George Wallace was the governor of Alabama who would not allow desegregation to happen - HELLO - it was not the republicans!!! The democrats were on the side for keeping slavery - what is wrong with u - can't u remember the civil war??? The dems were the confederates. Oh how short our memory is or better yet look at all the people like anonymous who have been brainwashed by a story about crumbs falling off a table. Get real and read the facts - the republicans have ALWAYS been against slavery, racism, have ALWAYS given more to charity & THE POOR and have ALWAYS paid more taxes because they have ALWAYS WORKED!!! UNLIKE THE DEMS WHO THINK IT'S OK TO TAKE WHAT THEY WANT AND NOT HAVE TO EARN IT!! Worse than that - they are HYPOCRITES and americans who vote democratic don't have a clue. Don't let history repeat itself.

EL PICAS BUYAS...was curious what your cute internet handle meant, being as I am white as rice, flunked spanish in school, went to Bing translation site and ran them words first 2 are spanish The Spades but the last is not spanish but a cute tangled web you weaved to expose your xenophobia! Funny how you preach of voting republican to bring one into the light and in your secret heart you harbor so much anger at them black folks, is that your real issue in life anger at some black who you feel all this anger at from some past precieved slight or real harm? Using the word in disquise Spades in reference to blacks is much like Cracker, the N word, etc., cute but it tells more about you than you know!

EL PICAS BUYAS, thanks for the unwanted psycho analysis but sorry you best keep your day job, my father found god 1 year before he died, we reconnected after many years of disconnection, hence your psychic ability is lacking as well, you might not try the palm reading, pscyhic thing to suppliment that income you seem to be worrying about in your retirement! Find anyone who at some time did not have a dim view of ones parents and I will show you a isolated case, the only one who walked on water was nailed to a cross bubba! You might be feeling guilt at how your kids don't want anything to do with you, is that why you seem so angry, bitter 24/7? You whine about things you have not one ability to fix, me I just live today and don't worry about yesterday its gone, tomorrow has not come yet! Now you run along and psycho analyze till the cows come home, play psychic all you like, you have no clue about me no more than I do about you! At least I don't use fake spanish to hide my white as rice true self!

A great myth exists that all republicans are rich, successful, business owners and all democrats are poor, welfare recipients, on food stamps and live in section 8 slums! Now if this myth was true how does it explain Pelosi, Kerry the Kennedys whom no one would call poor! I don't envy the rich, why would I envy someone whom Jesus tells me will be so burdened with their wealth many will not be able to enter the kindgom of heaven since riding a camel through the eye of a needle is a impossible task! Hence many wealthy fearing for their immortal souls upon their last will and testaments leave the bulk if not all their earthly wealth to charity and the poor! The only ones who envy the wealthy are the 2% wanna-bes who dream of entering that realm!

@Anonymous. They way you talk about this man, well. You say that he left a impression on you. You say that you had no political opinions. But, you already had a preconceived opinion. Your stories of the pass with this man and your father reveal. Your hate of your father. A mean drunk and a womanizer (your words not mine)and him being a republican and that other man a democrat. In you eyes that fellow put your father to shame. Which in turn that left an impression on you. The way you write about your father before he died. What he did validated your views and In your eyes you associate all republicans with your father. For all of your rage and ranting about republicans. It has nothing to do about politics. It's about your resentment that you have about your father. Deal with it. It's all in what will God ask you? The way you repeat it over and over, to make your point. Point taken.
