Library announces summer programs for kids
Fizz - Boom - Read
Monday, June 9, Palo Verde Valley Library's summer reading program for elementary through 6th graders swings into action with sign-up beginning that morning. When children sign up for the program, they will have their own reading log to record the books they have read - or if they are a pre-schooler, the books that have been read to them by an adult or older sibling.
When the kids return their books to the library, they will give an oral book report to one of the library's friendly listeners. Once the listener is satisfied that the child has actually read (or listened to) the book, the name of the book is noted in their reading log. The child gets a prize for every five books read. Each additional five books read earns the child a successively bigger prize until the level of 25 books has been reported.
The book readers who finish 25 books win the grand prize, a large bag filled with goodies. The grand prize winners also get to pick out their choice of a brand new book to keep.
Miss Joyce's Story Time
Beginning at 10 a.m., and lasting for about 45 minutes to an hour, Miss Joyce has an array of books that cover all elementary school grade levels. Bring children who enjoy reading, or being read to, each week at 10 a.m. starting Wednesday, June 11 for an hour of fact and fantasy. This year there will be five Wednesday story times from June 11-July 9.
Young Adult Reading Program - Spark a Reaction
Young adult readers, 7th to 12th graders, have a new set of rules this summer; read 1,500 pages and they receive a gift card. It is as simple as that. Sign-up begins June 9. Deadline to reach the goal of 1,500 pages is July 26.
The Palo Verde Valley Library is at the corner of Broadway and Chanslorway in Blythe, California. Come in the morning when it is still relatively cool outside and stock up on some good reading material for the warmer afternoons. If you have questions on any of the library's programs you can call the library at 760-922-5371. The staff will be happy to answer your questions.
