COLUMN: Grow up, folks
Bob Weete

Everybody has their own opinions about what is "good" for Blythe or what is "bad" for Blythe. And that is how it should be, I suppose. We are all alike in that respect. Unfortunately, our world has become all about "me", and we are, as a city - and a nation - on a self-destruct mode that will negate all the good in both entities.

"We" - everybody -really need to stop throwing the baby out with the bath water. Not a "new" expression, I know. It's another old one that has stood the test of time, for good reason. It, like all maxims, is a short verbalization of a rather complex but valuable concept evolved over time.

History and experience are meant to teach; we humans just don't seem to want to do our homework and gain from the past. What is past is "old"; what is "old" is useless. Rejecting all that was good in the past weakens the present.

There has been great turmoil for some time now. It's just come to a head lately. We have the opportunity - the obligation, really - to decide whether we, as a city, will really grow or die.

We must have a city council with five intelligent, loving, energetic, dedicated, loyal people elected who think and act as individuals, because each one is an individual. It is not imperative that all votes on a given situation be unanimous. The supposed idea is that it shows solidarity, unity, and all that good stuff.

Instead, what it clearly shows is that they are shedding their individuality, at great cost to their own identity, as well as to this city. The people of Blythe are individuals, with various personalities, beliefs, goals, etc. How, then, can a continually "unanimous" council be representing the community in its entirety?

It seems to me that no matter what the issue is, each member has an obligation to truly express his/her own beliefs based on the person's character. If they vote in order to "belong" with the others, they are not putting the citizens of Blythe first.

If they vote to be against whatever Mr. Evans proposes, for example, that doesn't even require them to think. Easy. If Mike is for it, I will be against it; if he is against it, then I must vote for it. No real character or qualifications necessary there. Many of us are tired of the "good old boy" politics that has brought us to this spot.

Elementary school playground tactics. Gang tactics. "Chicago" stuff. Let's grow up, boys, and realize that true growth for all will only come when the self, the ego, the power plays are set aside. Let's throw out the dirty water, but retain the valuable baby, maintain its health, its vitality, so we can all live here in productivity and peace.

The individuals on the council may very well be good men; I am definitely not suggesting they are not. Something often happens to good people when they get in a position of power. It is easy to slip into that mode. Being a good leader is not easy, I grant. Being aware of the dangers of power and how easily it can be abused is crucial and to be honest about it.

Why is it that other towns along the River have grown, have produced, have sprawled out, have good schools, great hospitals, and many youth activities, and we are literally withering on the vine? We reject new life (like Walmart, for one) because it might affect our business or the business of a close friend. When new businesses need employees who need houses, groceries, tires, etc. When we treat our customers right, our business can maintain those customers and we all prosper.

"Treat others as you want to be treated" is one of those great learnings from the ages. If you are the new kid on the block, you want to be treated with courtesy and respect, even if your ideas may express yourself in different ways. Children, even, are taught to "get along", to respect one another. If youth see adults - their role models -demonstrating these selfish character traits, what are they to do? Better they learn to be selfless from their role models.

"The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree." If the fruit of our labor is bad, who do we blame? And who should we blame? Come on, guys. Let's cut it. Let's make the supreme effort to be individuals, to think clearly, and avoid letting others poison our thoughts and our actions, so their own egos will not be challenged. Make your knowledge of what is right and what is wrong join with tolerance and self-respect.

This country grew from a mustard seed through hard physical labor, through tolerance of different ideas, and co-operation. It can still work miracles, but we have to practice it first.

As I said before. Obama promised to help the poor with aid like food stamps and so forth. I said it many times before and again as I said before. That once Obama was re-elected he would cut benefits to all. No one believed me. Then what happen to the citizens of Ohio ,State. They had their benefits cut 50 dollars a month. Most get about a 138.00 a month in food stamps aid, now they will be getting less. So what other state will follow suit?

@@ bob weete~I watched Fox News also, on election night, I switched over when they announced The President had won re-election, watching Karl Rove come unglued was magical. When you say Fair and Balanced do you mean when they were reporting Romney ahead in all the polls? Or maybe even earlier in the year when they were reporting on all the voter suppression laws that Republican Govs pushed through their state, with a gleam in their eye? You know those laws that were shut down in the state's supreme courts? I think it's a shame that network led so many to slaughter. Some woman in AZ ran her husband over because he forgot to vote and Obama won??? He's in critical condition. She must have been really mad at FOX.

Mike Evans is trying to help our town, I don't care who he gets mad at him. Eventually he will give up and you & the GOB can have this crappy town back.

@poordumbwoman~You have it all figured out huh? What about women who want to start a family and find out their fetus isn't viable and could cause their death. Should we just let them die? What if the fetus is horribly deformed and has no chance of survival? What if a nine year old is raped by a relative? Medicine has come along way but there are still unknowns. I won't even mention women who don't believe in God or a higher spirit. Don't try to push your morals (or lack of judging by your lack of compassion) off on me, I have my own and they include looking out for those less fortunate than me. I can't believe we are still protesting this crap.

For the eleventy billionth time, the Federal government DOES NOT PAY FOR ABORTIONS. Planned parenthood recieves funding but not for abortions, they are paid for through private donors, such as myself, who want low income women to be heathly. It helps millions of women, the abortions are a small percentage, as well as federal contributions.

Unbelievable!!! How does this man justify himself? He begins by saying that this world has "become all about 'me'." Well, on the one hand, everyone has always been about himself when one wants to survive, so nothing new there. On the other hand, I see evidence everyday of people being selfless-- helping in disasters, donating to others with time and/or money, joining groups that work together to improve lives (like TEACHERS!). And then to castigate the city council for voting as a bloc-- well, did we not just see that very same behavior out of the Repubs in Congress?? Check the voting records of those who decided to "make Obama a one term president." You had no quarrel with that behavior even when it almost brought down the US economy. I did notice you threw in the "Chicago stuff" as a slight against the president, also, when it was NOT the Dems who obstructed this country's future. And as for "treating others as you would like to be treated" what a joke from a man who wrote more than one column of unfounded, vicious attacks on our president's background, psychological makeup, and morality. You are truly one of the blessed to be so blind to your own ignorance. You and Rush and Donald and Karl are all of one cloth. Shameful! and not for the first (nor, I fear) for the last time!!!

How is asking for help on a fund raiser benefiting him??? You talk about tantrums....isn't that what our distinguished police chief just pulled!! Then went crying to the City Council about the mean ol'Mr Evans. WOW!! Talk about a double standard!! WHEN Mr Evans ask for any help or assistance its to help this community!!! Get your facts straight! So what....he's loud. How else can you get your point across with this council. What you call a "tantrum", I call passionate....

Well I agree that we all should have the right to write a letter to the editor with our name signed to it. I regret to inform you though that there have been multiple people tell me that they have tried to do so to only be told that they could not without giving the PVVT their sources or references. It is unforunate that this is the case. An objective opinion is where one comes to an opinion through listening and gathering facts from both sides and bases that opinion on it. It does not mean that you allow incidents in your past, that has no bearing on the issue at hand, to lead you to form an opinion that causes you to ignore the facts and become blinded with contempt. That is what journalist in this country use to do.

How is disputing ones assertions belittling them? I in no manner whatsoever attacked the author of the story personally. If anyone did that and has done it numerous times in the past it would be the author of the column.Telling our local leaders, 4 that he singles out, to "grow up" , that they are trying to "belong", "elementary school tactics", " we need five intelligent, loving, energetic, ....". The author makes some pretty nasty assertions about people that represent our community. You may find this acceptable but I do not and if I see that things are being misrepresented then I will point it out to the other readers here. If you want to make your own decisions you can listen to the minutes yourself or go on youtube and type the persons name in and watch videos of them at the meetings. Then you can draw your own conclusions.

Let me just put the obvious here that no one will admit too. Those are people that helped Obama get reelected. Would anybody want to get rid of their Sugar Daddy. People on Welfare receiving food stamps. Men and Women alike. White, Black and Hispanics. What about them illegals. The ones that your kids or grandchildren will be competing for education grants or for that job. That would help him or her support their families. Job's will be hard to find once, The Obama Health Care is started. If Obama really wants to do what he promise. Like fixing the deficit. He will have to stop giving away those freebies to all. Also stop the extended unemployment benefits. Why do I say this it's because. If I too was receiving all those freebies I too would have probably voted for Obama also. But to judge a whole political party because of a few nut jobs is sad. On Bono, I voted for the other guy. Why because I did not think she was doing her job. I for one am not a sheep. I think for myself. If someone is not doing their jobs or are nut jobs they should be voted out. That means all parties. I did not vote for Obama or Romney. Lot more to write. But so little space.

Article comment by: Poor dumb women

All these years the NOW has created supposedly strong, smart women who are to be created equally. Oh but now they forgot how to prevent pregnancy, LOL. Yes women can turn off their baby making devices - oh yea but they are too weak and/or lazy - and it's everybody else's problem??? Who cares if women do or don't have children - if they do then they should take care of them, it is their CHOICE if they don't have children - then they figured out how to prevent them - without anybody's help, lol. It is not that hard to prevent pregnancy - first and foremost - U HAVE TO HAVE A BRAIN - oh yeah i forgot - 1/2 of america including women - do not have a brain - how sad is that???? And YES i am a woman - never needed anybody's help to prevent pregancy - never needed anybody's help to raise children - even raised children from mothers who were too stupid to prevent pregnancy and too stupid to raise them. It is a shame that women have everything going for them and they continue to be a victim - that's what's wrong with america - too many so called "victims" - when these people CHOSE their path in life. The saddest part is that they can still be successful - but it's easier to be a victim. That's laziness. How hard is it to close your legs and say no I don't want to get pregnant??????

Despite the near dead even split in the "political philosophies" of the General Population, don't worry Bob. There is a beacon of light just down the road a few years which will step in and stop this mad rush towards decency. Be of good cheer, for in less than a week after the election fiasco, a Savior has been sent from Heaven to give hope for the future. I speak of course of "P"!! That's right, "P"! George "P". Bush has filed for political office in that Bastion of equality and racial/social HARMONY, Texas! And here I was, just about to give up hope for America! Regardless of the results though Bob, we should acknowledge the fact that we ALL benefited from having so many brilliant GOP minds clear up so many misconceptions that a bunch of Science Dummies had been misinformed about for so long. For instance, silly me, I had no CLUE there was a degree of Rape called "Legitimate"! Nor did I know that a woman can "turn off her baby factory" at will. If women knew that it could be bad news for the economy, what with there being no real NEED to use contraception. And, who could help but feel all warm and fuzzy inside after learning that if a woman IS raped, or even an 11-12 year old girl is raped, and the rape results in pregnancy, it's all in "Gods Plan"! Good old God, always looking out for us, eh? But worry not, Big Bob! Help is on the way! Bush 3.0 !! If that doesn't make you just wanna jump up in the morning and holla Hal E. Lool Yuh, what can??

Bob, it's funny that you seem to choose Mr. Evans to make your example. You have been to a few Council meetings, and you have seen how he acts. I dont know about you, but, his behavior is sometimes very childish. I guess you see this as upstanding? When he doesn't get his way, he throws a tantrum, and yells out. Now, explain to me how this is a dignified Council member? That is straight out embarrassing! Now, I am not saying Mr. Evans is wrong all the time, he just needs to learn restraint, and Tact when going about things. I believe he has lost supporters because of his behavior. Was spitting on a managment member really dignified? You also talk about the "good old boy" way of doing things, well, what do you call it, when a small group, or an individual helps Mr. Evans with a project of his, and he pulls for favors with him in his capacity as a Councilman? He needs to learn more, and learn to go about things correctly. Also, if He has no problem in pointing out what he feels is wrong about someone, should he also be able to take someone pointing out his wrong doings also?

It is hard for the sheep to understand that they have a voice, they lost it years ago - thus baa baa baa. It's a typical liberal thing, "I don't want to hear the other side, I want my opinion and I want everybody to have my opinion". If somebody other than the sheep have an opinion that differs from theirs, then it should be illegal or we need to change the rules or whatever - just don't want to believe everybody doesn't think like sheep. @yyeeeeeobama - u are the one of the sheep herein referred to. Go ahead and go right into the obama pen - i'll stay outside the pen so when i need food - i can go get it. Go ahead and wait for obama to feed u, lol. Good luck with that, lol, hahahahahahah

You are absolutely correct however, I personally feel that there "ought" to be some moral restraint as to using this outlet as a free (and anonymous) opportunity for an individual to attack anyone, whoever it might be. Why not simply present your case rather than trying to belittle another person for his/her opinions? What is "wrong" with that? Still, people feel obligated to do their deeds, but reamain unapproachable as an individual? Too bad the same requirement for a person to write a letter to the editor is not required for the comments. Have a good day.

I do completely understand the concept of page 4 of the newspaper and I do understand the concept of the readers comment section. It is where I as a reader get to respond to articles in the PVVT. This is where I get to put my opinion out to the writer or anyone else that chooses to read it. It is the writers choice as to if he would like to respond to my questions or comments. Mr Weete chooses to bring about what he considers our towns problems. I then chose to respond to what he sees as the problem and his solutions. So, do you now understand how the readers comment section works
