WEETE COLUMN: Read to children early in life
I don't intentionally look up stupid stuff on the internet, but sometimes, there it is, right in front of my eyes! I can't escape it! I rather suspect it to be something Al Sharpton to have written, but it doesn't really matter, I guess.

EDGERTON COLUMN: Cities under siege - by law enforcement
As a society, we accept this as a necessary tactic. What is unacceptable is any form of misconduct, including deception, by any law enforcement personnel while they are on our streets charged with protecting and serving communities. Misconduct goes against the integrity of law enforcement. It also undermines their mission, erodes the public trust, and jeopardizes officer safety.

WEETE COLIMN: Woman in yellow
Did you see her? That woman in yellow? Wasn't she magnificent? At first I wanted to stand up and cheer. What was she doing that made me want to yell, "Bravo! Bravo!" She was clobbering her son who was doing something that she clearly did not want him to do.

WEETE COLUMN: Don't touch my stuff
Some things can cost you a whole lot more than you thought. You see something you really, really want. You want it, oh, awful bad. But, you realize that it truly is out of the question. But it would be so cool, you think. Everybody would be jealous of me.

TIMES EDITORIAL: Not everyone is a biscuit thief
At the airport after a grueling business trip a woman's return flight was delayed. She went to the airport shop, bought a book, a coffee and a small packet containing five gingernut biscuits.

EDGERTON COLUMN: This revolution is being televised
Before Midol, marijuana was used to ease monthly cramps. Before nebulizers, marijuana was used to treat asthma. Before prescriptions, it was used to treat seizures. Before morphine, pot relieved pain. Modern science has changed the effectiveness of marijuana as medicine.

WEETE COLUMN: Where's the help?
I have had an Al-Anon group, now, for over 15 years. People come in, decide they are "cured", and then they drop out, only to ultimately find the pie wasn't done yet, and it spoiled. Their absence from the group denies much experience that the newer members will miss.

WEETE COLUMN: S-E-X...now that I have your attention
That's an old one, I know, but I did get your attention, didn't I? Now, the rule for today is "Do not commit adultery." Why not? Well, "Everybody else is doing it, so why shouldn't I?" Yep, that is the question.

EDGERTON COLUMN: John 3:16 applies to all, no exceptions
The most important message we learn from Christ is to love each other. God commanded us to "love thy neighbor." Sadly, parts of our society look past these simple three words.

GUEST COLUMN: Great Expectations?
I am thinking of positive youth development, sometimes referred to as character development. Do people view me as a man of integrity? Do people view my children as people of integrity? Are they contributing members of society, in their families, at the workplace, and in their churches?

WEETE COLUMN: Do not kill
A simple, clear, rule: do not kill. How many of us have broken that one? I have. In my lifetime, I have killed deer, turkeys, fish, rabbits, ants...

GUEST COLUMN: Lower drinking age, raise killing age
But allowing 18-year-olds to join the military has created illegal and immoral recruitment of minors, not to mention deep moral regret, post-traumatic stress, and suicide in young veterans.

WEETE COLUMN: Rules = love
My own parents were not "perfect", but then, who is? Certainly, there were things I "wanted", and I didn't get them. You know what? I don't think my psyche was harmed a bit! We were not really rich, but we always had food on the table, and I had a full belly. My mother made most of my shirts, I had a roof over my head, though it was not, certainly, a mansion, we had running water, indoor plumbing, and we also had a telephone and radio.

EDGERTON COLUMN: America's black eye: Veteran treatment
No veteran should ever be homeless, broke, unemployed, or hungry. No veteran should ever be without respect or the help they need... Unfortunately, the ones experiencing hell are those who have served our country as a soldier and now need help from the Veterans Affairs (VA).

WEETE COLUMN: Good choices = Happiness
We all constantly make decisions, all day long. And many of them have the ability to affect our own lives or others' in a negative way.  How many of us text while driving, even though we have been warned about it a jillion times. How many times has your speedometer crept up to over 75, when the speed limit it only 70?

WEETE COLUMN: Dear Senior Class,
If you are a typical teen, I would guess that you already consider yourself an adult. I hate to scare you, disappoint you, or discourage you, but this is all just the beginning of your education. I am 80, and still learning, believe me. If you think it's been tough learning all that stuff your teachers have been trying to pound into your heads, well, that's just the warm-up.

COLUMN: Are we there yet, 50 years after 'Bloody Sunday'?
Thousands recently celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of "Bloody Sunday" marching across Selma Bridge. We should celebrate those who fought for civil rights and those who lost their lives doing so. Is the struggle for equality over?

WEETE COLUMN: What's happened since the beginning?
By George, I do believe I've figured it out. "This world is going to Hell in a hand basket," they say, and that may very well be true. And that is a real shame, you know? Especially, since this country was blessed by God, and we used to be the guiding light to all the other countries, who had long ago gone astray.

GUEST COLUMN: Does faith in presidents matter?
Last month we celebrated the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, two presidents whose deep but somewhat unconventional faith has evoked great debate. Does the faith of presidents truly matter?

WEETE COLUMN: You can do it, yes you can - deal with alcoholism
If you have a relative or friend who is an alcoholic, you probably have a problem. One that you just cannot seem to overcome. You care very much for the person, but try as you may, you just cannot help that person, and you have tried so hard, but have failed. You have tried everything you can to get that person to change.

WEETE COLUMN: History in the making
"History will be made!"

How many times did you hear that being shouted from the mountaintops? History in the making! "We will transform America!" I didn't really take time to count during the election of our beloved President, Barack Obama, but I know I heard it way too often.
