COLUMN: An American Prophet
Anybody my age knows about Thomas Jefferson. And George Washington, and Benjamin Franklin, and all those great men who set this world on its ear by creating a new nation, dedicated to liberty for all. I wish I could be as confident that our young people are being taught what geniuses fathered this great, this unique, this God-fearing country called The United States of America.

COLUMN: One bad apple = one bad apple
Over the past several years, there has been much said and written about the Palo Verde Hospital. Sadly, much of it was not good.

COMMENTARY: How people of color can improve their end-of-life healthcare
The day my father died from prostate cancer -- Jan 11, 2011 -- is the day I decided that no family should ever experience the same pain. That day everything changed for me.

COLUMN: School Daze a'coming
Oh, boy, school is about to start up again. Are you ready for it? If you are a teacher, you are probably dreading it, because of all the free vacation you have had. Unless, of course, you have spent your summer "vacation" attending summer school to pick up a couple of courses you need. Or, you have needed to teach summer school because you needed that little bit of extra money to put into your bank account.

COLUMN: What's it gonna be?
Over the years, I have apparently "offended" some people when I have compared The President to such as Hitler and Stalin. I just realized that I could even compare him to someone from the Bible! No, he doesn't even come close to being the Savior, as some would apparently believe.

COLUMN: Feeling tranquil?
Now, we find that with Israel and Hamas bombing and killing one another, with Russia invading the Ukraine, resulting in more bombing and deaths, with Syria stirring things up and Iraq being lost, not to mention Iran's nuclear threats, and with America's southern border being over-run by children, adults, murderers, rapists and terrorists who want to abuse America's known generosity toward humans in trouble, I find that this, plus the shooting down of a plane full of some 300 innocent passengers, mass graves found in Mexico, and Lord knows what other demonstrations of loving our neighbor the media has missed, is now described - by our President, at least - as "tranquility".

COLUMN: Let me do it myself
I hope that everyone who read last week's front page story, "College track star reps Blythe" took proper note of the significance of this story. This young man, Chancise Watkins, "made it", in spite of coming from little old Blythe, California.

COLUMN: I can, because I say so!
I retired from teaching in 2000. I hadn't attended any school board meetings for quite some time, but recently, I attended a couple of school board meetings. There was the call to order, and the pledge of allegiance. I noticed, happily, that "under God" was still there. And then there was a "moment of silence."

COLUMN: Celebrate independence
I don't care what he says. America is, indeed, an exceptional country, and I have been, and continue to be, proud to be an American. That is not to say I believe America is perfect; it is not. But I love her anyway. She has attempted to correct some of those faults. Unfortunately, politics reared its ugly head, and some of our very own people have found or made cracks in our souls and they have taken advantage.

COLUMN: It's summertime!
Good grief, here we are at the time of year where the temperature begins to make us wonder why we ever decided to settle and make our homes here. It's the time where the temperature begins to edge up over 100 degrees, and we stay in as much as we can, and in the back of our minds we are aware that it ain't over yet. We have to look forward to July, and then August, and then we begin to realize that we actually will make it.

COLUMN: Let's do it
Okay, Blythe. What are you going to do about it? We have a hospital situation that has been a focus of embarrassment, we finally rid ourselves of a city manager who was out to make a killing, we've had a police chief who lined up with the other "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" club members, and now we have, apparently, a school board situation that apparently is in need of our scrutiny and correction.

COLUMN: Another Revolutionary War?
Every time I write something about President Obama, or liberals, I am swamped with comments that chastise me, and charge me with watching Fox News. Yes, I do watch Fox News, and I listen to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Glenn Beck on the radio.

COLUMN: Where's the serenity?
Al-Anon is a program of recovery for anyone whose life has been affected by the problem of alcoholism in a relative or friend. If you feel you can identify with this, perhaps you should take the step of helping yourself to find a solution to the stress, the fear, the loneliness, the shear exhaustion to trying to get your loved one to stop their drinking.

COLUMN: To the class of 2014
