COLUMN: An American Prophet

Anybody my age knows about Thomas Jefferson. And George Washington, and Benjamin Franklin, and all those great men who set this world on its ear by creating a new nation, dedicated to liberty for all. I wish I could be as confident that our young people are being taught what geniuses fathered this great, this unique, this God-fearing country called The United States of America.

We learned quotations by these gentlemen and others who had the wisdom, and the determination to study history, study the Bible, and create one of God's masterpieces. I recently ran across some of Thomas Jefferson's lesser-known quotes that are also significant. And they are most relevant as we face the world that we have mistakenly allowed to "replace" those old-fashioned, out-of-date beliefs.

I feel compelled to share some of Jefferson's statements that we have not heard so much. These observations come from a man who made it a point to study diligently the history of previous failed attempts at government. I pray you will find them interesting.

"When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe."

- Thomas Jefferson

We still have wide open spaces, yet what have we done?  We piled ourselves, one on top of the other, and corruption is as common, as blow-flies on a dead horse, even in the smaller towns like Blythe.

"The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."

- Thomas Jefferson

What happened to the pride Americans used to have as they provided for their own needs, rather than have those who do the work provide, through taxes, for those who choose not to?

"It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world"

-Thomas Jefferson

I can't even name the trillions of dollars we are in debt, because by the time this reaches print, it will already be outdated.

"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them."

- Thomas Jefferson

Our government is clearly out of control, cramming "nannyism" down our throats. They set it up so that masses will be unemployed, can't afford health care, will feel hopeless, and then they will be our "saviors". Hogwash, pure manipulative hogwash.

"My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government."

- Thomas Jefferson

This notion is one, actually, that I have heard mentioned lately. Government becomes so large and unwieldy that the checks and balances will not work.

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." - Thomas Jefferson

Yet, our beloved government is working its fingers to the bone, trying to do this very thing. It actually wants us to be defenseless.

"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort to protect themselves against tyranny in government." - Thomas Jefferson

A sign something is definitely wrong, when we have to protect ourselves from our own government. Seems unlikely? The average American citizen does not have access to what is actually being done in secret by our "dedicated" leaders. The press has been bought off. Really.

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

- Thomas Jefferson

Sadly, if we are to save the American Dream, it looks like we may have to shed more blood of patriots and tyrants in order to protect ourselves. And, equally sad, we may have to do it sooner rather than later. This is, indeed, scary. Who actually wants a civil war? Only those who would destroy this country and its way of life forever.

"To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical"

- Thomas Jefferson

This is reminiscent of the original reason for the Declaration of Independence, isn't it? And true Americans fought a Revolutionary War to prevent taxation without representation, didn't we? And they say that history tends to repeat itself. Hmmmm. Friends, this is truly serious stuff we must face, head-on!

"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property - until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered."

- Thomas Jefferson

WOW! And to think this man actually told us - in advance - how to avoid the very pitfalls that are ripping us apart in our "modern, progressive world". If that is not simply amazing, then I really don't get it.

Yoo! Hoo! America! Time to wake up! This man, Thomas Jefferson, and his fellow patriots knew what they were doing. What a shame it would be if we let it all go down the toilet.
