COLUMN: Feeling tranquil?
Bob Weete, columnist
Bob Weete, columnist

The word "tranquility" is still defined in my dictionary as: "the quality of being tranquil, or state of being tranquil; calmness, serenity." Simple enough, hmm?

Now, we find that with Israel and Hamas bombing and killing one another, with Russia invading the Ukraine, resulting in more bombing and deaths, with Syria stirring things up and Iraq being lost, not to mention Iran's nuclear threats, and with America's southern border being over-run by children, adults, murderers, rapists and terrorists who want to abuse America's known generosity toward humans in trouble, I find that this, plus the shooting down of a plane full of some 300 innocent passengers, mass graves found in Mexico, and Lord knows what other demonstrations of loving our neighbor the media has missed, is now described - by our President, at least - as "tranquility".

Here at home, we have a government that has boondoggled its citizens by promising hope and change; we find all that has been a sham, perpetrated by professionals who probably took their training from Hitler and Stalin and their murdering, manipulating lawless lunatics who care not one iota for humanity. "Tranquility"? Really?

America no longer receives the international respect it used to, and Americans have little confidence in the government, and the huge number of people who are unemployed, and the "nanny" taking over with getting as many as possible to become slaves to the government welfare. I could go on and on, but you get my point.

I grew up during WWII, and though there were deaths, fighting, and millions of Jews slaughtered, it wasn't "tranquil" times. And yet, because we were fighting for our country, and the Nazi atrocities were disgusting things to the entire world, we knew we had a moral obligation to act, and we did. We were proud. We, as God-fearing Americans, were confident that God was with us as we finally claimed victory over the evils that had cropped around the world. Though we didn't "like" war, we had the confidence in our leaders; we rallied around the flag.

We Americans largely were guided by moral principles which, as you know, have been replaced "political correctness". Boy, did we get suckered in on that one! In succumbing to that concept, we discarded all the God-given blessings that had been ours. Much like Adam and Eve, who succumbed to Satan's temptations. History repeating.

With the moral principles guiding us, if not a tranquil life; at least it was much simpler and freer. We had free speech, guaranteed by our masterpiece Constitution, but we also had the moral application that we should love our neighbors as ourselves. I also remember the unwritten rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." We were able to get along better, even if we had different points of view.

As I read and learn about the denial of traditional American rights, I don't feel tranquil. I reflect on my three years in the Marine Corps (you don't pronounce the "p", Mr. President), the pride that we felt, the respect that we got, it truly rips me when I hear some of the things that our government is doing to all the branches of the service, basically taking away the esprit de corps, so essential.

I am nervous, because in the past, this country always maintained strong armed services intending to discourage any other country from messing with us. Yes, I guess we did feel a bit confident and tranquil then. We were confident we - and God - could handle whatever came up.

Now, I just missed the Great Depression, but I have heard about and seen pictures about the terrible time that was for Americans. In the current "tranquility" I note that more and more people are taking advantage of the government's generous offer to support millions and millions more people, rather than provide our constitutionally-guaranteed rights to free speech, freedom of religion, press, and the pursuit of happiness. And America cannot afford to be nannies!

I never heard of a kindergartner being suspended from school for chewing his pop tart into the shape of a gun. Parents felt free to send their kids to school, and expected them to be safe, and learn the traditional values of America, along with Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic, and we were free to say the Pledge of Allegiance every darned day of the week. And we were proud of it!

Constant reports of murder, rape, child abuse, and even our so-called leaders have become notorious for their involvement in prostitution, pedophilia, persistent lying, and even ignoring the sacred laws of our land, our Constitution! In these tranquil times we find people who clearly are trying to stir up people to get them at one another's throats. There is hardly a thing that is not deemed "offensive" to somebody. Thus, the majority of Americans are mandated to cater to the "victims" that abound.

And right at the core of it all, some of those same people are determined to rip out the very heart of all America's glory - our faith, our God!

This President and his cohorts are dead wrong! This is definitely NOT an era of peace and tranquility, as promised. And we are about to lose all that has made this country so special. Wake up, America! If we don't want "tranquility" as defined as our President defines it, then say so!
