COLUMN: Narcissism, Part 2
Bob Weete
Essay

Narcissism, as I've said, is all too common in today's world. It can be extremely dangerous when a person who has it also has gained an important position in society. No, as I have said, I am not a psychiatrist, I said that from the beginning, but I have had reason to do some reading on it.

What I have learned can be found online. I have a particular concern that our President has this problem, and I have also said that I have compassion for him as this is something that he cannot control, as it doesn't exist - in his mind. As President, he cannot see, and indeed is not really able to care, that he is putting the finishing touches on the destruction of America that began many years ago.

Interpersonal Relationships. The individual with this condition is able to relate well with those who adore him. Anyone who challenges him personally, professionally, or his power, that person is in big trouble. Without ethics or moral values, he lashes out in any way possible to bring that person down. Witness the stream of really un-Presidential statements he has made about Romney and Republicans/Conservatives in general.

The "blame game" works well in the characteristic. How long will he blame Bush for the problems he "inherited"? While he may have somewhat of a point there, that excuse for his apparent inability to change things as he has promised, has worn quite thin by now.

If he isn't blaming Bush, he's blaming the Republicans. Candidate Obama was going to bring us together, to work, negotiate, compromise with Congress and others yet, his personality will not give an inch and he and his pals Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid lie right along with him. Claims of transparency and bi-partisanship have been rampant - and blatant lies.

Their definition of bi-partisanship is that the Republicans sell their souls and constituents to the devil and rubber stamp the agenda the liberals set forth. "You have to pass the bill before you can know what's in it." Even though it was Nancy Pelosi who said it, it clearly is owned by the President, also.

Along with all this, his war against the rich is absolutely clear. "You didn't build it", he says. Yet he, himself, seems pretty well off - with taxpayers' money. He also clearly advocates sharing of the wealth, and compassion. What about his own sharing and compassion for his relatives? Again, actions speak louder than words. "Don't do as I do, do as I say." Is that not just a bit hypocritical?

Cognitive Style. The arrogant aggressive narcissist is knowledgeable, decisive, and opinionated. He can be heard making statements that Congress must pass a critical bill. Why? Simply because he says so? Is this the method of bi-partisan technique? Certainly, we all value our own opinion; that is a given. This type of person with the bloated ego sees only his way as the "right thing to do".

When he finds that Congress (because of the Republicans) doesn't rubber-stamp his projects, what does he do? Well, in many cases he simply ignores them and writes himself an Executive Order, lifting that middle finger to Congress and the people he is sworn to serve. Needless to say, this kind of person is way above the requirements of the Constitution. He does not need to follow the rule of law, and neither are his cohorts.

A narcissist may say "I feel your pain". You've been had if you really believe that. Again, actions declare who a man is more than his words. He likes to present the idea that he feels the pain of the illegal immigrant. He, in reality, is using these people by making them feel he has empathy for them, but his hidden agenda there is actually to make all poor people and all minorities feel indebted to him for their salvation.

A compassionate man would help those millions to become more self-dependent rather than crippling them into becoming morally and ethically handicapped for generations to come. He desperately needs their vote pledge to keep his destructive agenda alive.

And finally, the gigantic action that reveals the kind of person a narcissist is, is that statement he made to the Russian to the effect that his hands are tied, until the election is over and that after he is elected (no if, by the way), he can be more flexible. If that isn't narcissistic, not to mention suspicion of betrayal of America, what does?

There will be those who say I "hate" the President, that I am racist. Definitely not true. I merely find that this President's actions are phony, suspect, and downright dangerous for this country. I shudder to think, frankly, how he will react if he loses the election, and I truly believe that if he does win, that it will be because of hanky-panky in the balloting. A narcissist personality simply must be victorious using any methods he can find, regardless of ethics.

El Pica~Something we agree on: This town IS corrupt. I live in the county so my opinion doesn't matter. I do think it's a trickle down effect that needs to be stopped. The whole country is corrupt. I just don't think the President is the evil man you think he is. I think he is trying to turn it around but there are special interests fighting him and unless we make ourselves heard, we don't stand a chance.

I am glad you do fact checking as that seems to be a huge problem when it comes to why people vote the way they do. I myself am a middle aged, middle class, white woman who is married with children and grandchildren, this election is crucial to my livelihood. We lost a lot of money during the economic crisis and I don't want to go back. I also fact check and my facts don't align with yours. But I do appreciate your comments and we do agree sometimes I just don't always have time to make comments and don't want to leave anyone hanging. Debate is good because we learn things we may not have learned if our heads are stuck in the sand. (deleted)

@Crazy Town. Lady it's you that is misinformed. Obama has nothing to run on, all he has is hate and racism. When I read stuff the GOP writes or says. I try to check to make sure it is the truth. As with all of what Obama says. I get news letters from Fema and CDC, Customs and Border patrol, Disability gov and Health agency and many more agencies just to know what is happening. I try to do fact checks also. That way no one blows smoke up my eyes. Don't rely on some news person or any politician. I trust none of them. Yours side and my side. Take everything with a grain of salt. Remember here in Blythe, we have our little politicians playing in their little playground called Blythe. Do you trust them all blindly. I think I like debating with you. Even if I think you are wrong. But that's your right.

Mr. Weete, if you want to see a person with narcissism, I suggest you walk, not run, to the closest mirror. You can observe a public figure, assess his body language and determine he is a narcissist. Now, if only that were true.

As to, how long to blame Bush? Things that happen on your shift, good or bad, aren't necessary a result of what did or didn't do. He inherited a huge mess and has done his best to have the government help. Government, as a good conservative knows, is not a cure for all ills. It is, in my opinion, a player in solutions. If McCain or even someone else would have met the crisis more effectively than the Prez, is mere speculation.

You sir came to a conclusion about this president a long time ago. Now you search for things so you can criticize him-including this specious 'narcissisim' ad infinitum stichk. Please don't subject us to Narcissism 3 the mini-series. Enough is too much in this case. Move on.

El Pica, you don't know what you are talking about. You can voice your opinion all you want but it sounds a lot like Weete's opinion. All blow and no go. Obama has had to give in on many issues, you can't dismantle the kind of machine the GOP have in 4 years. Their platform is racist and if you are not rich and white, you have nothing to gain from it. Do you really think stimulating the economy starts with tax breaks for the rich? Seriously take an economics course. The only way to stimulate the economy is to create jobs, which will put money in your pocket and allow you to pay for your own stuff instead of relying on food stamps and welfare. They have blocked every job package Obama has introduced in the last two years. It's also a lie that liberals want to take care of people that are lazy and laying on their couch all day. I personally think they should all be drug tested and do community service for every dollar we give them. The GOP don't want to teach anyone to fish, that's another lie, that is actually a Democratic idea.

Rich people don't care about poor people, at least most of them don't and Mitt Romney talks out of both sides of his mouth. I have a feeling a lot of your opinions are religion based, have you researched the Mormon religion? Do you think they will seperate church from state like our constitution says? This country is made up of a lot of different views, all should be recognized. They probably won't put this up because it is so long and I could go on and on. Educate yourself and turn off Fox News.

@CrazyTown. Is that your interpretation or is it Obamas? In what way are there going to put people back in chains or back into the closet and bare foot and pregnant into the kitchen. So if you are poor? What are they going to do? Make you work for your food and shelter and money to spend. Man that is pure evil. If your old they will make sure that Obama's health care does not send you to the death camps to die from lack of receiving health care. Obama gives you with one hand and with the other he takes more of your rights away. In the end it's Obamas way or the Fema Camps. Remember when he said that he wanted an Army just as strong or stronger than the US Army. An Army of like minded people like him.

Young Voter~I hope what you say is true because the Republican party will lie, cheat(2000 election), and steal to win this election. We lost two years ago because the GOP lied to the voters and a lot of people believe what they hear. They did do one thing they promised, they did everything they could to make sure this Presidency failed, even if it was to the detriment of our country. If you are poor, black, female, old or gay, you are stupid if you vote for the Republican ticket. They can't lie right? Wrong, they can, they will, and they have.

Tax Payer~I have a feeling you are the one on welfare. I see your comments all over this site. Quit lying like your buddy Weete, you aren't rich enough to be in the GOP and neither is Weete. Have you read the GOP's party platform? Do you realize they want to take us back to the 50's? If you don't see that, you are color blind, like Weete, he only sees black and white, mostly white. Educate yourself, Please.

@ WWW
"we'll take it from here" is what wer'e worried about.

Why anyone thinks the president deserves a second term is beyond me. The community organizer has no idea on what he is doing. All he is capable of, is hiring other people to do his thinking for him. It would appear that the only people that want to re-elect this guy are getting some assistance from the government.

Article comment by: A Young Voter

I am an young (25 year old) independent voter who has voted both republican and democratic in prior elections. I come from a conservative family (I dont divulge that I have vote democratic to them). Mr. Weete's opinion page seems to a negative effect on all my friends. His comments have undertones of prejudice toward one man (our prez) and he does not disclose any evidence of what he is stating. How can he not see how unfair his comments are? He gives an assessment on a person who he has never met or spoken too?

I hope you realize that there is more than a modicum of acquiescence regarding the outcome of the election in your assertion that the president can only win by cheating.

You're like an angry child who, once he realizes that his team is going to lose, begins to invent outrageous explanations for the defeat, even when he has have no evidence whatsoever to substantiate his claims.

Stupid refs! We got robbed!

PS In reality, voter fraud is extremely rare. It's just the latest false specter of the right that suits their agenda to disenfranchise poor and minority voters.
