COLUMN: What's it gonna be?

Even as a child I remember listening to my parents and their friends talking about their votes at election time. They seemed proud of their record of voting a straight ticket. Even then, I didn't see that as reasonable, though of course I didn't share those opinions with them.

I remember thinking that it didn't seem to require anything of them, any thinking or evaluating of candidates to pick who they thought was truly the best candidate. Odd.  As important as elections were, to choose a method that required so little of them seemed almost a waste.

Consequently, when I was old enough to vote, I registered as a Republican, and have endeavored to get as much information as I could about the candidates. I probably have voted for more Republicans over the years. But I have voted for some Democrats, too.

In all those elections over the years, it seems to me that liberals in general seem to support individual-focused moral concerns of compassion and fairness more than conservatives do. Consequently, much of their campaigning involves convincing each voter that they passionately care for the individual and being "fair". That seems the core of much of their drive to divide the people of this country into minorities or victims they can make vague promises of hope to.

"We will take care of you" is a rather common theme. As a result, the core of American thought has been totally destroyed. I just do not think that mankind was intended to be "taken care of". I believe that this blessed country was founded upon, and grew healthy and strong because we endorsed the concept of self-reliance, believing that God would provide. We took pride in our work, we took pride in the fact we could work and provide for ourselves and our families.

As it is, our men have been castrated symbolically, by the introduction of the "politically correct", "just do it" abomination of society. I recognize that the poor will always be with us. But, I just do not believe that so many millions is what was meant. And our leaders have recently passed legislation "giving" the unemployed a huge number of unemployment goodies.

That is surely enough to make them accept and expect the freebies that go with it. The liberals are the friend of the poor, they say, all so compassionately. The natural inclination of man to work to earn his rewards has been neutered.

Not a good thing. When youngsters are idle, they get restless. When they get restless, and the hope of pursuing and achieving worth-while goals becomes personal satisfaction, they tend to get a little rambunctious with all the gobbledy-gook nonsense they are exposed to, and if parents are too busy to properly guide them, many try to fill the void in their lives with drugs, with irresponsible sexual activity, and the next generation of lost lives is produced.

Liberals tend to consider themselves as especially resistant to prejudice. They have an "open mind", you know. In actuality, their alleged open-minds allow them to exaggerate extensively the difference between themselves and conservatives. They really do not have a clue of what real conservatives believe. They take the view from conservative talk shows and television programs. Then they make caricatures and spread that around.

Liberalism does not equate with liberty, what people used to come here for. Ultimately, after we pass through the Just Do It stage, resulting in lawlessness. And we go through the Wild, Wild West, again. These youngsters who have not been exposed to the concepts of respect, courtesy, love, and values are naturally reverting back to a time before civilization of the people.

Some of these, you have to understand, even wind up running cities, governments, Washington, D.C. And look where it's got us.

"Progress" is another key word that has been abused by liberalism. Real progress does not suggest we transform what was working for the benefit of all into something new and exciting. In reality, progress is made by learning what mankind has already learned to our advantage. Wisdom is the savoring and practicing the things that have already been experienced.

Look at all the progress America made, when it was a caring, law-abiding, God-fearing nation. From nothing to the most powerful nation in the world! Not that "power" is the goal. It does not mean we can beat any kid on the block; it means that we have used our gifts to our advantage. Not my advantage. Our advantage. For mankind, not just the self.

Now, sadly, we seem to have become complacent, self-satisfied. And we have allowed ourselves to be distracted from our goals and we are about to sink into the biggest sink-hole of all time. We have allowed ourselves to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Is this liberal, progressive stuff the saving grace we have searched for, worked for? Think about it. But don't take too long. I'm not sure we have that luxury anymore.

Beautiful! You are right on the target, my friend. It was those attitudes that brought this country to the pinnacle it reached. Millions of people who respected and honored our character and independence. At the same time, though, greed and envy took over. People want to come here to take advantage of our vulnerability. We are "helpers", and that has been taken advantage of, and the people with money, influence, and power, are dragging us all back to the kind of life of dependence, lack of opportunity that we left the old country to escape. I am proud that you had the guts to write. I know there are many out there who agree, but are afraid to write for fear someone will find out who we are. We must, once again, stand together for the America we love and believe in.

Just found out I have a relative born in 1776 in VA - a time when there was no such thing as handouts those strong people took care of themselves & their families, all of them hard working, smart, independant Americans. They not only fed & clothed themselves they went to war to defend their independence from overbearing "socialists". Because of their will, determination, toughness and intelligence, we have the great country called America. Socialism did NOT make America great! FREE people carved out their own life as they saw fit and deserve credit for the greatness of America. Too bad more than 50% of todays "americans" are ignorant, weak & dependant on government - it's sad to acknowledge. America can't withstand the greed of politicians, ignorance & laziness of the people, the press who takes sides, won't report the truth, the whole truth ¨hing but the truth. America is falling a little each day, nobody notices, but when you have 3 generations who have taken and have NEVER GIVEN in the way of work, taxes, sacrifice, charity - we will all fall. That is the saddest thing to acknowledge, America at the bottom of education, fitness, abilities, manufacturing, business, etc. Too bad we don't all have the moral integrity of our ancestors who made America great.

Caring ABOUT in the Moral sense is completely different than Caring FOR in the Social sense. When someone can look you in the eye & say they genuinely believe that getting $$$ BACK from an entity they Paid INTO their whole working life is an Entitlement, that person more belittles themselves than you. To equate Entitlement with Moocher is a Deliberate attempt to skew the view. A common practice among minds mired in superstition and the 19th Century!

Our political system was NOT intended to be a two party system. A vast majority seem to think it is EITHER Democrat or Republican. What it has turned into is "us" VS "them". This is just a re-run of "divide and conquer". How many times during a political oratory has someone said," I'm voting for ______, they're the lesser of two evils." Yet from their own admission, they still vote for "evil". What has been lost is ownership of mistakes made. Not since Harry Truman, has "the buck stops here" been a mantra for politicians.
