4/30/2013 5:00:00 PM Hospital to hold May 4 Salsa Run/Walk 5K
BLYTHE - Palo Verde Hospital will be holding their 1st Annual 5K Salsa Walk/Run/Bike on May 4, with registration beginning at 6 a.m. at the hospital, 250 N. First Street. The race begins at 7 a.m. and a salsa-making contest will be held at 7:30 a.m. The route runs from the hospital south on 1st Street to Hobsonway, west to Lovekin, north to Chanslorway, east to 3rd Street, south to Hobsonway, east to 2nd Street, north to Barnard, east to Broadway and then south to Murphy where the run ends.
"Blythe has many runners and walkers in town that travel hundreds of miles out of town to participate in runs for other cities," said Dina Springer, the hospital's communications coordinator. "We would like to bring the people into Blythe to promote healthy minds and healthy bodies."
The cost to register is $35 and hospital employees can register for $20. Registration includes an event T-shirt.
"The proceeds go to the Blythe Police Activities League Summer Swim program, to help maintain the pool and pay for the life guards so the community can have a way to cool down in the summer," Springer said. "This will also be a great way to kick off the festivities in the afternoon for the Cinco de Mayo celebration at the Rec Center."
The event will begin with a flag ceremony presented by the local Boy Scouts of America, and the Palo Verde High School cheerleaders will be cheering the participants along the route. There will be awards for the fastest runner/walker/biker as well as an award for the youngest and oldest participants. There will also be an award for best tasting salsa.
