QUARTZSITE, Ariz. - Remember the Ricky Nelson song, "Went to a Garden Party"? Quartzsite just experienced its very first Garden Party Feb. 24 to great fanfare and support, raising $1,600 for cancer research.

VFW Post 769 Ladies Auxiliary wanted to raise money for cancer research but at the same time offer an enjoyable event. Dona Dole, this event's chairman, went all out to make it something special for those who attended, and ended up doing really well for the charity.

The tables were decorated with little wooden birdhouses, made by Dole and her friends, and several tables were filled with donated prizes for the drawings. Many of the ladies attending got into the spirit of things by decorating and wearing a hat, and paraded around the room to the stage, where prizes were given out for several categories, including funniest and best themed.

Dole greeted people at the door. She also shared with the audience about the auxiliary and its efforts to raise money for cancer aid and research. Also, Dennis Dole, past Post commander, thanked everyone for coming and wished everyone a great party.

In between lunch and the drawings, the band Rhythm and Romance performed. Goodie bags filled with information, bracelets, and pins about cancer research were given to participants. Over 132 people attended the first-time charity event.

Organizers look forward to making this an annual event.
