QUARTZSITE - Over 274 people attended this year's "A Walk in the Past" at the Hi Jolly Cemetery this past Saturday. For the past two years, the Quartzsite Cemetery Board organized the "Spirit Walk" event with volunteers dressed up as real people who had been part of Quartzsite's history, and who were buried in the pioneer section of the cemetery.
This year the volunteer actors portrayed the Quartzsite people who started the town in the late 1800's and early 1900's. There was an elderly couple who talked about the town; an assayer who was in the middle of an argument with one of the prospectors and the sheriff who broke up the argument; a ghost of a miner; a merchant selling his wares; a madam and a working girl who helped out a jilted mail order bride; a musician; a traveling preacher; and a grieving grandmother. There were also card players at the sarsaparilla bar getting a game going. All were dressed in period costumes and they all had fun playing the parts of some of the people who made the town grow in those days.
It was a great success and people who came commented on how interesting it was to see the different characters of that era.
The cemetery board thanks all the volunteer actors, helpers at the event, and everyone who came out to see it for making it such a huge success.
