QUARTZSITE - The annual Silent Auction sponsored by Operation Hero Comfort to raise money to send packages overseas to troops in harm's way will be held on Dec. 1 at the Town Hall in Quartzsite.
Operation Hero Comfort is a non-profit organization that was started in 2006 by Doc and Anita Carlson, who had been living in Minnesota and had several family members in the service. They sent packages to these relatives until they came home and after moving to Quartzsite, decided that they would continue to keep sending packages as long as they could.
In 2006, they formed Operation Hero Comfort and started out by doing the packages on their porch. They started doing some fundraising after forming their non-profit, and their first event was a silent auction that was held at the Q.I.A. It was a huge success, and lots of donations came in from the auction where they raised enough money to help send hundreds of packages out.
Since that first time they have been holding the silent auction at Town Hall, and it has also been very successful there. This will be the third year of the event there and it is hoped to be bigger and better than ever. Donations of items for the auction are needed and anyone who wishes to help can call Anita Carlson at 763-639-9330 (leave a message and she will get back to you).
There will also be a box at the event that you can drop off any items you think can be sent over in the packages - toiletries, cards, games, books, magazines, non-perishable food items (canned or boxed, no pork), candy, socks, razors, etc., anything that you think the troops would need or want. These will be sent over before Christmas.
There will also be a table set up inside the door for anyone who wishes to sign the Christmas cards that will be included with their packages before Christmas. The troops love to hear from home, and especially at this time of year when they miss their families so much.
Door prizes will be announced throughout the event and after all bid sheets are in, the winners of the auction will get their items.
Refreshments will also be served during the event and there will be a display of letters and photos of some of the "adopted" units that Operation Hero Comfort has heard back from. Come out and join in the fun and get some great bargains at the Silent Auction and show your support for the men and women who put their lives on the line every day.
Mark your calendars for Dec. 1, 1-4 p.m., at Town Hall in Quartzsite.
