Jacket streak ends with overtime thriller
Randy Peterson
Palo Verde Valley Times

BLYTHE - Kane Daniels' three-point shot beat the game clock by about a second but when it slid through the net it ended nearly two months of frustration that saw the Palo Verde High School Yellow Jacket basketball team break a losing streak of 11 games with a 72-71 victory over Calipatria in two overtimes Tuesday evening at the PVHS gym.

"The guys played with great energy," said Jacket coach, George Dagnino. "They were out of control a good portion of the time but they never gave up and good things happen when you maintain the energy."

The win improved the Jackets to 1-1 in Desert League play and was their first win of the campaign since they opened the season with a 68-23 rout of Desert Mirage back on Nov. 27.

Daniels had cut a Hornet three-point lead to one with a pair of free throws with just under 10 seconds to play and after Calipatria hit one of two free throws it set the stage for the winning three.

The sophomore point guard was good for 19 points on the night and shared team-scoring honors with Darien Herrera who was instrumental in bringing the Jackets back from an 11-point halftime deficit.

The senior forward drilled two of his three triples in the third period when the Jackets outscored the Hornets 17-6 to pull even after three quarters, then opened the final stanza with his third trey as the Jackets took the lead for the first time since the opening period.

The lead changed hands seven times over the final period and two overtimes as the Hornets forced the first extra period with a three-pointer at the end of regulation.

Phillip Bias was good for 12 points on the night despite being saddled with foul troubles. The senior forward was instrumental on the boards in the final minutes of the fourth quarter and early in the first overtime before fouling out.

Jon Whiting finished with 11 points, five of those coming in the overtime periods, while Joseph Diaz scored six points and Richard Henderson was good for five counters in the contest.

"It's good to get the monkey off our back," said Dagnino. "We played with a lot of heart tonight and we should be able to build on the victory for the rest of the season."

The Jackets will now hit the road as they travel to Brawley on Friday before returning to league play on Tuesday in Holtville.

Some of you guys act like there are a lot of applicants for the coaching jobs. In fact many of the coaches are begged into taking the jobs because no one applies. Part of the reason they don't want to is that they get criticized here for not getting unprepared kids to the championship. How about volunteering to help or even putting that application.

Buddy system??? What are you talking about a buddy system lets talk about all the varsity coaches at Palo verde.....We know that the football coach and basketball coach is the same guy. The baskeball Jv coaches are not buddies with the AD and they got hired to coach... The baseball coach I think is from Hemet CA I do not think he is a buddy with the AD... The wrestling coach is no buddy with the AD... The girls basketball coach is a teacher and his assistant is a parent of one of the girls and I dont think they are throwing parties with the AD... So what do you mean about a Buddy System?? The JV football coaches used to coach my kids in flag football and this was their first year coaching High School football.. Until you can start talking facts on here why dont you shut the (deleted) and stop hating!!

I think that is the key word that the kids have lost in PV Athletics is RESPECT! You have to show respect to earn it! This buddy system is a joke! And everyone knows it. We can complain all till our heads turn but until our so called Leaders on the Board make change well were stuck with it! I guess before we vote on Board Members next time we should look on who we are Voting for. Someone whos is looking out for the best interest for our kids.

I have a B.A already. Teachers don't get paid enough. Besides that Imperial has 100 more students then we do!! They will come down to earth when FREEMAN is gone. I plan on coaching somewhere soon someday. But I don't want to coach in Blythe. I don't like the buddy system, and I tell it like it is! Every team I have coached we won. I am a true Palo Verde Alumni and I bleed green and gold, but these kids deserve better. Get a new A.D. that kids respect.

PvAlumni, you sure do have something to say everytime the basketball team loses. Imperial is a bigger school than palo verde and is one of the upcoming schools in the IVL. It doesn't matter if brawley had not won any games all year palo verde still beat them and they are a bigger school. What you are saying about we don't beat bigger schools is untrue because brawley is a casualty of that. Matter a fact why don't you quit hiding behind the computer and come out and coach these kids if you think there needs to be a change. Until then (deleted) because us REAL Alumni's support our team no matter who is coaching and playing. You are getting annoying on here about a new coach I have a solution for you, why don't you enroll in college and take courses and achieve your BA and than get a teaching credential and you could be a coach! The kids deserve better and they don't need to be reading stuff that negative people are posting.

Well it happened we got blown out the gym @Imperial. Like I said quit defending the coaching staff. We can't beat schools as big as us. We can only beat Calipat school pop maybe 300 to 500 and Holtville maybe 500 to 700 school population. Now let start to see change. This is terrible!!!! Come on principal quit turning your head talk to the Board about getting new coaches from other areas. Put it in the paper, online what ever you have to do. I know our former principal would of done something about this already. Real schools fire coaches that don't win. You read about this everyday in the newspaper. Pick Ad or Coach, obviously he can't do both.

I guess Brawley union high school is not a great program... And you are hating just because u think the kids deserve a better coach doesn't mean u should be on here being negative! Have you ever heard that when you surround yourself around negativity it spreads! Why don't you people try to be positive I think the kids deserve that more than anything! What do u think?

A win is a win I get that! But look at the caliber of teams we beat really we r down to holtville and Calipatria level... give me a break. Kane's threw up a prayer it wasn't a ran play or set up. He got the coaches off the hook for another week. If you beat Imperial @Imperial I will shut my mouth and personally shake your hand. Run and gun offense doesn't work, you need a game plan, how about some picks and plays.

We don't hate the team, just the opposite. We feel these athletes deserve the best coach Blythe has to offer. Period. What we HATE is that one particular coach is unwilling to get the coaching staff these kids deserve. Now do you get it?
