BLYTHE, Calif. - The Palo Verde High School boys' and girls' track teams both claimed wins over their Desert Mirage counterparts in a meet at Scott Stadium last week.

The Jacket girls swept four of the 11 contested events and only gave up one sweep to their opponents as they claimed a 64-40 triumph while the boys managed only two sweeps but scored in every event including winning both relays on their way to a 78-49 victory.

Two of the event sweeps for the Lady Jackets came in the throws as Eliza Tellez won the discus, Ty Daniels finished second, and Andrea Valenzuela placed third. Then the trio switched places in the shot with Daniels winning the event while Valenzuela and Tellez were second and third, respectively.

Audrey Castillo, Star Rojas, and Lety Covarrubias swept the 1600-meter run then Rojas and Castillo switched places in the 800 meters and Covarrubias was third again as those two races accounted for the other two sweeps for the Jackets.

Castillo and Rojas were one and two in the 3200 as well. Rojas also added a third in the 200 meters. Shelby Cyr picked up wins in the high and long jumps while Ty Johnson won the 200 and placed second in the 400 while Kailey Lee completed the Lady Jacket scoring with a third in the long jump.

The Jacket boys opened the day with a win in the 4x100 relay and never trailed as Carlos Dorame, Jordan Velarde, Jose Gaytan and Markel Noble each ran a leg.

Noble went on to win the 100-meter dash and the long jump while Gaytan and Velarde were second and third, respectively, in the 100.

Velarde added a win in the 200 and was joined by Dorame and Gaytan in sweeping the event.

Other Jacket firsts came from DJ Burton in the two hurdle events, Felix Ruiz in the 1600 meters, and Terry Daniels in the high jump.

Steven Valdez chipped in seconds in the shot put and discus while Burton had second in the high jump, Carlos Dorame in the 400, Eric Hernandez in the 800, and Marcus Ramirez in the 3200 meters.

Ramirez added a third in the 1600 and 300 hurdles while Pete Sandoval was third in the shot and discus. Daniels helped with a third in the long jump while Treshawn Edmond added a third in the 400-meter dash.

Dorame, Hernandez, and Edmond then teamed with Tyrell Black to win the 4 x 400 relay in the final event of the day.

The Jackets host Calexico next week to complete the Imperial Valley League dual season and Scott Stadium is scheduled to host IVL prelims the following week.
