Brawley rolls over Jackets in Imperial Valley League dual

BLYTHE, Calif. - Both the boys' and girls' Palo Verde Yellow Jacket track teams saw their Imperial Valley League records slip to 0-2 as the Brawley Wildcats dominated in a meet last Wednesday at Scott Stadium. Brawley won the boys' side of the competition by an 83-43 difference while the girls fell to their Wildcat counterparts by an 84-41 margin.

The highlight for the Jacket boys was the distance running of Felix Ruiz as he out dueled a pair of Wildcats to win the 1600 meters to begin the day then capped the running events with a victory in the 3200 as teammate Nick Andrews finished third in the event.

The only other individual victory came in the discus where Pete Sandoval won the event with Jacket teammate Syrus Garcia taking third.

The Jackets actually won the 4 X 100-meter relay when the Wildcats were disqualified at the final exchange when the third Brawley runner fell into the Jacket lane after the exchange impeding Palo Verde's fourth runner.

A bit of another anomaly happened in the long jump when the top three finishers all were measured at 20'3" for their best attempt. Going back to the second best effort for the three competitors saw Palo Verde's Markel Noble settling for third while two Wildcats claimed first and second.

Noble had to settle for second in both the sprints as Brawley's Jordan Brewer looks to be the man to beat in the short distances this year.

Brewer also won the high jump as he edged Jacket newcomer, Terry Daniels, by a couple of inches in the field event.

Other scoring for the Jacket boys saw Carlos Dorame finished third in the 200 and 400 meters while Jose Gayton was third in the 100 and Eric Hernandez finished third in the 800.

Henry Miranda and Sandoval tied for second in the shot put while D.J. Burton finished second in the 110 high hurdles to complete the Jacket scoring.

On the girls' side, the Jackets did most of their scoring in the field events. Shelby Cyr won the long jump and the high jump and finished second in the triple jump and added three more points with a second in the 100 high hurdles for the locals.

The Lady Jackets earned a sweep in the discus as Andrea Garnica won the event, Eliza Tellez finished second, and Vanessa Ramos was third.

Ty Daniels added second-place points for the Jackets in the shot put while Kennedy Cox did likewise in the long jump and chipped in a third place in the triple jump.

In other running events, Ty Johnson claimed second place in the 200 and 400 meter races while Audrey Castillo finished third in the 1600 and 3200 distance events and Star Rojas claimed a third in the 800 meters.

The Jacket track team will travel to Southwest on Thursday before competing in the London Bridge Track Meet in Lake Havasu, Ariz. March 29. Next home meet will be April 10 when Holtville visits Scott Stadium.
