BLYTHE - The Palo Verde High School Lady Yellow Jacket basketball team played seven games last week at they traveled to West Shores and Needles before going to San Pasqual High School for a weekend tournament. When the week came to an end, the Jackets had claimed two wins.

West Shores proved to be the elixir for the locals as they claimed their first win of the season with a 72-8 triumph.

All seven Lady Jackets dressed for the contest scored and four players were good for double figures.

Koli McKinney led the way with 18 points while Kennedy Cox and Luisa Gonzalez were each good for 14 counters. Ty Johnson rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10 points while Rian Hannah scored eight and Andrea Valenzuela had six. Lauren Hardin rounded out the scoring with two points.

The trip to Needles produced a similar result from their first two meetings as the Lady Mustangs dispatched Jackets 41-25 on Tuesday.

Needles led 22-9 at the intermission and improved the lead to 35-14 in the third stanza before cruising to the victory.

Gonzalez led the Palo Verde scoring with nine points while Cox was good for eight. Johnson scored six and McKinney managed two counters.

The Lady Jackets opened pool play at San Pasqual against Antelope where they dropped a 49-29 decision to the Rams being outscored by 10 points in each half.

Cox led the Jacket scoring with nine points while Hannah managed seven points and Gonzalez scored six. Johnson and McKinney rounded out the Palo Verde scoring with five and two points respectively.

The second pool-play contest featured what Jacket coaches felt was their best effort to date against San Luis as Palo Verde had a shot to win at the buzzer and a three-point attempt bounced off the rim and the Jackets fell 31-29.

Cox led all scorers in the contest with 11 points and Gonzalez added nine. Johnson scored four, Hannah was good for three, and McKinney scored two.

A cross-pool contest with Santa Fe Christian saw another solid Palo Verde effort against the class of the tournament as they fell by a 38-21 count.

Gonzalez led the way for the Jackets with eight points while McKinney scored six, Ty Daniels scored four, and Cox had three counters.

The Jackets picked up their lone victory of the tournament in the first round of elimination play as they dispatched Gila Bend 43-28. Hannah led a trio of Jackets in double figures with 12 points while Johnson and Gonzalez were close behind with ten points apiece. Cox scored seven points in the win and McKinney completed the Jacket scoring with four points.

The victory earned the Jackets a second meeting with Santa Fe Christian in the semi-final round.

The Lady Eagles proved to be more efficient this time around as they rolled to a 35-16 halftime lead before claiming a 58-27 triumph.

Kennedy Cox earned all-tournament team for her efforts over the two days of the tournament.

The Jackets hosted Shadow Hills on Tuesday and will travel to Desert Mirage on Thursday before taking an extended holiday break before Desert League play begins in January.
