BLYTHE - The Palo Verde High School Yellow Jacket baseball season opened this past weekend when the Jackets traveled to the Coachella Valley to take on the Xavier Prep Saints in a double header. The locals came up on the short end of both games as they dropped the opener 3-0 and fell in the nightcap by a 12-4 margin.

The opener proved to be a pitching duel as Palo Verde's Darien Herrera went the distance, gave up three hits in six innings of work and allowed only one earned run. The junior right-hander struck out six and walked only one in the game.

Xavier's Liam Fleet proved to be one better as he struck out six and walked seven but allowed no runs and only two hits, both off the bat of Yellow Jacket Dylan Schriner. Schriner had a double and a single.

The nightcap saw the Saints explode for eight runs in their opening at bat to take the early advantage. The two teams played on level ground the rest of the way as both scored four times after the first inning.

Offensively, Herrera had three hits including a home run while Schriner added two more hits to his resume for the day. Brandon Johnson chipped in a two-run double to the effort.

Other Jacket hits came from Brenden Carrigan, Joey Guerrero and Damien Ramirez.

Freshman Gage Wright came in relief of Johnson in the second inning and allowed just three more runs to the Saints in his four-plus innings of work.

The Yellow Jackets were in Yuma last weekend for the Shamrock Classic at Yuma Catholic High School. They were scheduled to play a pair of Imperial Valley League rivals, Central and Calexico as well as Kofa and San Luis from the Yuma area.
