Jacket Boys Basketball get wake up call
Randy Peterson
Palo Verde Valley Times

BLYTHE - After having little trouble in their opener with Desert Mirage, the Palo Verde High School boys' basketball team got a dose of the other side as they ran into a pair of buzz saws in Madison and Cathedral City later in the week.

Both were deep and very athletic and rolled to wins over the locals as Madison claimed an 82-60 win over the Jackets and Cathedral City rolled to a 103-60 win.

After battling on even terms over the first few minutes against Madison, the Warhawks went on a 18-2 run over the final six minutes of the quarter and improve their advantage to 51-22 by halftime.

The Jackets made adjustments and looked much better in the second half but the deficit was too much to overcome. Palo Verde managed a 38-31 scoring edge over the final two quarters.

Robert Bowen paced the Jackets in the second half as he scored 18 of his game high 20 points in the final two periods and Richard Henderson also hit double figures with 15 points.

Although nine different Jackets scored in the contest, no one else had more that five points.

The next night against Cathedral City, the Lions unveiled a transfer student from Louisiana and he had his way with the Jackets. Christian Wilson accounted for 53 of the Lions 103 counters in the contest including pouring in 23 points in the third period alone as Cathedral City enjoyed a 37-14 scoring edge in the period.

Mercy timing went into effect shortly into the final stanza as the Lions coasted to the win.

For the Jackets, Bowen again led the scoring with 14 points while Henderson and Kane Daniels each managed 10 counters and Phillip Baez scored nine. Darien Herrera was good for eight points while Jon Whiting scored six and Deaunte Munson tallied four.

The Jackets travel to University City on Monday and were in Needles Tuesday before returning home for a another DIII challenge with Santana at the PVHS gym on Friday.
