BLYTHE, Calif. - The Palo Verde High School Yellow Jacket boys' golf team won the third Imperial Valley League golf meeting of the season to assume the top spot in the league standings with their victory on another windy day at Borrego Springs Resort last week in Borrego Springs.

The Jackets have 14 points at the midway point of the league season, one more than Brawley's 13, as the league gets together again this week at Barbara Worth Country Club in Holtville for the fourth of six scheduled IVL meets.

Despite windy conditions again for the meet, the Jackets improved their team score to 402 while the Wildcats also improved but were 18 shots behind Palo Verde as the Jackets improved their margin in total strokes over the Wildcats to 29.

Other team scores saw Imperial slip by Southwest for the third spot in the meet as they had scores of 517 and 521 respectively while Central finished fifth with a 570 team score.

Holtville failed to field a full five-man team for the day and didn't have a team score.

Palo Verde's Darien Herrera turned in the top individual effort of the day with a round of 75 to earn medalist honors by a single stroke over Landon Currier of the Wildcats. The Jacket senior has tied or had the low round in each of the three league meets.

Phillip Thome finished the round two strokes back and tied for third for the afternoon with Brawley's Matt Schmitt.

Chad Winkler came to the party big time as he carded a round of 78 and was fifth for the day, beating Brawley's third player by ten shots.

The other Jacket scoring had Logan Whiting with a round of 85 and Andrew Thome with a round of 87.

The Jackets tuned up for the meet on Monday in Indio where they played Coachella at Indian Palms Country Club in Indio. On yet another very windy day according to Jacket golf coach, Ken Fletcher, the Jackets fared well with a 219-250 victory over the host Arabs.

Herrera continued his solid play and claimed medalist honors with a round of 37 while Phillip Thome was just two shots back at 39. Dillon Smith shot a 46 while Whiting and Andrew Thome completed the Jacket scoring with rounds so 48 and 49 respectively.

Following the meet at Barbara Worth Country Club on Wednesday Palo Verde will host the Jacket Scramble on Thursday at the Blythe Golf Course and will participate in the River Valley Tournament in Needles next week.
