BLYTHE, Calif. - The Palo Verde High School Yellow Jacket golf team did what they had to do when they hosted the second of six-league meets the Imperial Valley League has for their golf schedule when they won the day at the Blythe Golf Course last Wednesday afternoon.

Brawley won the opener a week earlier at their home course and the Jackets knew they needed to do likewise as they carded a 439 total on a very windy day at the local links.

The Jackets bettered Brawley by 24 strokes as the Wildcats came in at 463 and erased a 13-stroke deficit in the process to take the lead in total strokes.

There's still a long way to go with four matches remaining but neither of the frontrunners will have home course advantage the rest of the way.

Darien Herrera and Logan Whiting shared medalist honors for the day as each carded rounds of 77 in the blustery conditions and now have three of the top four players in the race for the league's individual champion.

Herrera leads the individual chase by seven shots over Brawley's Matt Schmitt as Schmitt shot an 84 on Wednesday while Whiting moved into third place ten shots behind his teammate.

Phillip Thome slipped to 89 in the match at home but is still in fourth individually followed by a trio of Wildcats.

The rest of the Jacket scoring saw Chad Winkler come in with a 95 while Andrew Thome was at 101.

Southwest finished third for the second week in a row with a 511 total while Holtville jumped to fourth with a round of 528 after finishing last at Brawley. Imperial and Central completed the team scores with 557 and 566 respectively.

In nonleague matches earlier in the week, the Jackets dispatched Parker in a nine-hole event at home by a 207-252 margin then traveled to Coyote Wash Golf Course in Wellton, Ariz. where they finished second in a four-way meet.

Herrera again led the way with a two-under par round of 35 while Whiting carded a 37 and Phillip Thome had a round of 39. Winkler finished the day with a 44 while Andrew Thome completed the Jacket scoring with a round of 52.

Yuma Catholic edged the Jackets by a couple of strokes as the Shamrocks carded a 199 to Palo Verde's 201. Home team. Antelope, and Ajo were well back with totals of 256 and 293.

Herrera was the only Jacket in the 30s with a round of 37 while Winkler and Phillip Thome each had rounds of 40 and Whiting shot 41. Dillon Smith completed the Jacket scoring with a round of 43.

The Jackets traveled to Indio to face Coachella in a match at Indian Palms on Monday and will hit the road Wednesday for IVL #3 at Borrego Springs Resort.
