BLYTHE, Calif. - The Palo Verde High School Yellow Jacket boys' golf team opened their Imperial Valley League season with a second-place finish at Del Rio Country Club in Brawley.
In what looks to be a repeat of a year ago when the two squads battled to the end and eventually shared the league crown, this year looks to have much the same feel to it as the Wildcats and Jackets dominated the six-team affair.
Brawley held serve on their home course as they carded a team low of 430 while the Jackets were only 13 shots back at 443.
Southwest came next at 484 while Imperial was in at 526. Central and Holtville completed the scoring with rounds of 592 and 648, respectively.
Last year, the Wildcats and the Yellow Jackets each won three of the league meets to share the league title but Brawley won the tiebreaker with an edge in total strokes for the season.
The individual race looks to be as tight as ever as Palo Verde's Darien Herrera and the Wildcats' Matt Schmitt shared medalist honors as each finished at eight over par 79.
Phillip Thome of Palo Verde is just one shot back at 80 while Brawley's Landon Currier was another shot back at 81.
Palo Verde's Logan Whiting was in at 89 in 8th place individually while Dillon Smith was tied for 12th with a 94. Chad Smith completed the Jacket scoring with a round of 101.
In a couple of nonleague meets the Jackets dropped a 182-245 match at LaQuinta before rolling to a 212 to 270 victory over Antelope in a match played at the Blythe Golf Course.
"Our top two continue to play well," said Jacket golf coach, Ken Fletcher. "It was a tough golf course in LaQuinta and the wind was pretty strong in the match with Antelope."
Herrera had a 38 and Thome a 39 in the match with the Blackhawks and then switched positions as Thome carded a 37 in the match with the Rams while Herrera had another 38.
At LaQuinta, Whiting had a 48, Chad Winkler carded a 57 and Dillon Smith shot 60 while against Antelope Winkler had a 44, Whiting carded a 46, and Smith was good for a 47.
The Jackets are off this week but will resume competition next week when they host Parker on March 24th, travel to Antelope on the 25th, and host the second IVL meet at the Blythe Golf Course on the 26th.
