BLYTHE, Calif. - With wins over Calipatria at home along with a road victory in Holtville and a second defeat at the hands of league powerhouse Imperial, the Palo Verde High School Lady Yellow Jacket basketball team headed into Tuesday's contest at Calipatria with second place in the Desert League standings on the line.
"It was one of our realistic goals when we entered the season," said Jacket basketball coach, Tim Cox. "We felt we could finish second in league, and there's a good chance to do just that."
The 54-33 win over Calipat was the first key as the Jackets pulled away in the second half to secure the victory.
The Hornets held an 8-5 advantage after one period but the Jackets turned the tables in the second quarter with a 14-6 scoring edge and never trailed after that.
Ty Johnson scored 13 of her game-high 18 points in the second half as the locals outscored their guests 35-19 in the second half.
Kennedy Cox also managed double figures as she had ten of her 16 points in the second half as well.
Luisa Gonzalez finished with nine points while Koli McKinney tossed in seven counters.
The rest of the scoring had Rian Hannah with three and Ty Daniels scored one.
At Holtville, the Jackets had another solid second period as they used a 14-5 edge to build a 22-11 halftime lead then cruised to a 38-30 triumph.
The Lady Vikings cut five points from their halftime deficit in the third stanza but the Jackets were able to hold on in the final period for the win.
Cox scored five points in each half, to lead the Jackets with ten points while Johnson and Hannah each contributed eight points to the winning effort. McKinney and Daniels completed a very balanced scoring attack on the night with six points apiece.
The loss to Imperial at home was a study in frustration for the Jackets as cold shooting and a rash of turnovers saw the locals find themselves on the short end of a 35-point halftime deficit.
The second half was a bit of a moral victory for the Jackets as they avoided falling behind by 40 points when mercy time would have been implemented as Imperial coasted to a 46-10 victory.
Imperial, Central, and Calexico are all in Division 3 of the CIF/San Diego Section so the Lady Tigers hold their own with the powers that be in the Imperial Valley.
A 70-22 loss to the Imperial Valley League Brawley Wildcats in a league crossover contest late last month was other contest played by the Lady Jackets.
The Wildcats racked up 26 first-period points and led 35-15 at the intermission before reaching that 40-point advantage sometime in the third quarter.
The Wildcats are in Division 2 of the section and featured an explosive offense on the night as five different Wildcats connected on 10 three-pointers in the game.
Johnson led the Jacket scoring with 12 points while Cox scored seven and Daniels tallied three points.
After the game in Calipatria on Tuesday, the Lady Jackets were in Central on Thursday.
Their final two regular season contests will be at home when they face Holtville in the final league contest of the season on Tuesday Feb.18 before hosting Calexico on Thursday Feb. 20.
