BLYTHE - Doing most of their damage in a five-minute stretch of the second quarter, the Palo Verde High School Yellow Jacket football team cruised past the Indio Rajahs 42-7 Tuesday evening at Scott Stadium.

"We scored on special teams and defensively and that's always a bonus," said Jacket football coach, George Dagnino.

Senior receiver, Damian Ramirez, had another big night offensively to spark the Jackets as he started the night's festivities by returning the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown.

Mistakes and penalties bogged down the Jacket offense on their other two possessions of the first quarter and after the Rajahs punted to open the second quarter, Ramirez took a 16-yard pass from Jordan Velarde to complete a nine-play, 80-yard drive for the second Jacket TD with 9:30 to play in the period.

Three running plays that covered 48 yards from running back Markel Noble and a 15-yard completion off a deflection to Cody Holladay set up the score.

Over the game's next five minutes, the Jackets took advantage of a couple of Rajah turnovers and another defensive stop to put three more touchdowns on the scoreboard to take a 35-0 advantage.

Treshaun Edmond picked off an errant pass on the first play of the ensuing possession and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. It was Edmond's fourth pick of the season and the second he has returned for a score.

After an Indio fumble on the first play of the next possession recovered by Jonathan Bequer, the Jackets went 40 yards on four plays for the next score, a one-yard plunge by Marquis Bowen. Bowen had set up the TD with a 29-yard scamper.

The Yellow Jackets completed the barrage at the 4:34 mark of the period when Ramirez turned a flare pass from Velarde into a 60-yard scoring play.

"We had pretty good balance on offense and a lot of guys got to touch the ball." Dagnino said.

The only Palo Verde score of the second half came midway through the third period when Velarde found Noble with a 12-yard scoring toss that completed a three-play, 63-yard scoring drive.

Jacket kicker, Felix Ruiz, did his part with a perfect five-for-five in the conversion department.

The Rajahs found some success with their running attack in the second half and managed to eat up most of the clock in the third period before scoring their lone TD of the night early in the fourth stanza.

The Jackets ran only 10 plays in the second half as mercy time ran out the final period.

Velarde finished the night with 173 yards and three touchdowns while connecting on eight of his 11 throws along with rushing for 20 yards on three carries.

Logan Whiting connected on two of his six throws for 60 yards for the game.

Bowen carried the ball seven times for 74 yards and Noble finished with a net 44 yards on his four carries.

Ramirez caught five passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns while Edmond had two receptions for 15 yards. Chris Navarro had one catch for 36 yards.

Ivan Aguayo had another monster defensive night with 12 solo tackles, including one for a loss, along with assisting on four other stops.

Rafael Adame picked up his second interception of the season and had four tackles while Roy Reid and Syrus Garcia each were credited with six stops.

Including assists, Nick George and Kyle Martin, were in on five stops apiece.

"Overall it was a pretty good effort," Dagnino said. "We just need to continue to improve as a team."

The Jackets will complete their non-league contests tonight when they travel to Holtville for a showdown with the Vikings.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

You guys are even worse than the people "discussing the hospital and city manager mess! This is good for our kids to see and listen to? They see this and then they go to practice. How about the morale of the team when you guys bad mouth the coach? THINK!

lol.. this is getting funny! The funny part is when credit is given to the undeserved and unappreciative individuals who call themselves leaders. When ya have Coaches blogging on themselves to look good that takes the cake! PV has not been the same in a while and everyone knows it! Good Luck to the players there the ones who are doing the work. The rest Is a Circus with one big ring leader. Not hatin just sayin....The kids are only doing with what they are given which isn't saying much. Until the District makes some moves nothing will change zero leadership.

you misspoke, you want to have the last word, this isn't no contest between you and I, I will let you have the last word. Question, have you ever coached at any level-ever? I have, and also I have played ball at college level, is Coach the best coach in all the land, No he isn't, but, he is the best coach that we ever had at Palo Verde High, is rotating 2 QB's very smart, that's debatable, we would need a lot more space to type and hash that one out, and we know that coach is offensive minded coach, everycoach has his specialty, he does what he can with the athletes that come out and participate, its up to us as parents and adults to encourage the young lads to get out there and to stay out of trouble, with full participation then we could truly reach our potential, and along the way- it builds character and life skills that will make good men out of our youth, that's just a snipit of what this is all about, yeah, I think we were pretty good back in the day, but its the kids turn now to shine, Go PV Jackets, one thing I was told long ago, either lead follow or get out of the way. We could all do something positive, have to think positive, and hopefully good things will happen. thanks for listening.

wasn't done yet, another thing, defense is horrible, that's not telling me anything, why do you think that is. Tell me exactly what it is that the coach is doing wrong - you know it all, give me some details, its easy to sit back and bash people, put someone down, kick someone when they are down, that's bad karma dude. Either that or you must live in IMPERIAL. Let's be true jacket supporters, lets do all we can to support this team and their quest To the Jacket varsity team- don't give up, keep fighting and in the end, you will always be winners in my book. GO Jackets!

@pvhs is a joke and @ pv alumni, what I have to say, I think you won't like, you guys don't know what you want, you want the coach out, how is that going get all of those big lazy high school athletes to join the team, and dedicate themselves to representing, yeah, we all look for an excuse or a scapegoat to help us through the rough times, well when the going gets tough-that's when the tough get going let me clue you all on what makes a good team, first and foremost you must have the athletes, yeah I know- way back when I played we used to blow out the imperial, calipatria teams, so what, times change, get with the program, help out or shut up and get out of the way, the coach has only so much power, he can't run or throw the ball, he can only do so much.

Article comment by: Dag supporter

Hey all of you haters get a clue, Dag puts in more time than any coach in high school football. There are ups and downs in sports, if you have seen the high school we are lucky we are competing. This coach and their staff have put in the time to make this program successful no matter who they play. Go and watch practices and see the time these coaches put in. No one wants to coach in Blythe for a long period of time, everyone should applaud Dag for being there for so long. Except for last year Dags teams have done very well and made the playoffs. The school has been in a big recession in sports the last couple of years. Luckily we have had a coach that has stuck around.
Quit hating and support these kids who work their butts off in the extreme heat in Blythe

if Holtville is the best team in the Division, the division is a joke, we smashed Holtville every year when I was in school, when we actually played good teams. Dagnino needs to be removed!

The coach got out coached again in holtville. Really now holtville is beating us. When you have a weak schedule you set your team up for failure. I took a step back and a deep breath and still the same pattern. 1 QB only will work better than two.1 leader 1 QB. Defense is horrible. Now what do you have to say. And I bet the whole IVL was scouting that game because they all had bye week.

That's your argument, the coach got out coached in the championship game, that's all you got, dude, get your head on straight, does that make him a bad coach because somebody else is better coach than him, ok go out and recruit a coach that's better than what we got already and come back and tell me how that goes, you got no clue guy, take a step back, take a deep breath and let out a big shout out to the coach that we have, support what we got, this isn't politics dude, there isn't any conspiracy here, its sport, you got to get out and support, maybe even volunteer to assist in coaching if you know so much, you can do something, start by making some fact based statement.

I had no clue coaches could be on the CIf sd section playoff committee, that's a new one for me. Ok that was me sounding dumb. How can head coaches be on the sd playoff committee? or damn I got it cause of the new rules in place that's why the playoffs changed. I will say it again, read the San Diego times for the change put in for every sport. GO JACKETS. The ad should just write his email on here so all these people can email him.

Yeah in that D-4 championship he got out coached big time. It called time management. He will never leave or hire any coaches that give he a threat. He give himself job security sort of speak. He could never win a D- 4 championship that is why he chose to step down a division he is on the committee, everybody knows that!
