BLYTHE - The Palo Verde High School Yellow Jacket track team opened Imperial Valley League dual competition last week in Brawley and put a scare into the Wildcats before the boys fell by a narrow 66-63 margin. The Wildcats have dominated the locals the past few seasons with shear numbers and that system worked well against the girls, but the Jacket boys, with a bit of a reversal, gave their hosts all they could handle.

Distance races have been tough on the locals in the past but the Jackets dominated those events against the Cats. Felix Ruiz won both the 1600 and 3200-meter events with times of 4:52 and 11:40 respectively and finished second in the 800 meters while Javier Cabrera won the 800 with a 2:05 clocking and finished second in the 1600 meters. Eric Hernandez was second in the 3200 meters as the Jackets finished 1-2 in each of the distance events.

Leonardo DeLeon gave the Jackets a pair of firsts in the weights as he won the shotput with a heave of 41 feet then claimed first in the discus with a toss of 121'.

The Jacket boys claimed the 4x100-meter relay as the team of Markel Nobel, Tyrell Black, Nate Vasquez, and Phillip Bias defeated their Brawley opponents.

Nobel, just a freshman, went on to win the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.2, the best time in the IVL thus far this season according to Jacket assistant coach, David Atiyota. Nobel then added a pair of seconds to his day's resume as he jumped 18'9" in the long jump and was 38' in the triple jump. Other Jacket points came from Bias with a second in 200 and a third in the 100-meter dashes while Black was second in the 400 meters. Jacob Kuamoo was third in the high jump and D.J. Burton finished third in the 110 high hurdles.

The Lady Jackets managed only three firsts on the day as Kennedy Cox had a personal record in the triple jump with a winning effort of 29'1" while Christina Bequer won the high jump with a 5' effort and Bianca Saldivar won the 100-meter high hurdles with an 18.49 effort. Bequer added third-place points in the long jump and Eliza Tellez was third in the shot put and discus while Andrea Garnica finished second in the disc. Ty Johnson finished second in the 200-meter dash.

The weekend before the opening to the IVL, the Jackets competed in the Central Relays. The Jackets' lone first on the day came in the 4x200 relay where Bias, Nobel, Black and Jose Gayton won the event.

Palo Verde's 4x100 relay team finished second while other placings for the boys came in the sprint medley where Jeremiah Braggs, Joseph Diaz, Treshawn Edmond, and Javier Cabrera did the honors and the team of Vederi Atiyota, Braggs and Kuamoo placed in the high jump. Individually, Burton was third in the 110 high hurdles.

The Lady Jackets claimed third-place finishes in the girls' discus as Tellez, Garnica and Andrea Gaona took the medal and the high jump team of Bequer, Cox, and Shelby Cyr finished third.

The Jackets hosted Southwest at Scott Stadium on Tuesday and will host again April 18 when both Imperial and Holtville will come to town.
