Final boys basketball loss leaves sour taste

BLYTHE - In a game they could have won, the Palo Verde High School Yellow Jacket basketball team wrapped up their season with an upsetting 47-35 loss to Calexico at the PVHS gym Thursday night.

"It was a game we could have won and should have won," said Jacket basketball coach, George Dagnino. "We just didn't finish very well tonight."

The Jackets trailed early 9-3 and finished the first quarter on the short end of an 11-5 score but rallied in the second period with a 12-6 edge in points as the two teams went to the intermission knotted at 17-17.

Palo Verde led four times in the third period but the Bulldogs ran off the final seven points of the quarter to take a 33-26 advantage to the final stanza.

Palo Verde used a 7-0 run to pull even to begin the fourth and tied the game at 33-33 with 4:35 to play but it was all Calexico the rest of the way as they used a 14-2 run to close out the game and claim the victory.

"We had ball handling issues most of the night," said Dagnino, "and we really had trouble down the stretch with turnovers along with not shooting very well."

Phillip Bias was the only Jacket in double figures as he finished with 11 counters. Richard Henderson scored five of his eight points in the opening period while Vederi Atiyota was good for five points on the night. Jon Whiting finished with four points and Rafael Adame tallied three. Darien Herrera and Joseph Diaz completed the Jacket scoring with two points apiece.

The Jackets finished the season with a 5-16 record and tied for second in the Desert League with a 3-3 mark.

The board, staff, and alumni know we need change before it gets out of hand. It will happen can't tell u when but it will come.
