BLYTHE - The Palo Verde High School Yellow Jacket boys' basketball team concluded Desert League play on Tuesday, as they claimed a 47-45 win over Holtville at the PVHS gym. The win evened the Jacket league record at 3-3 after earlier losses to Imperial and Calipatria.

Palo Verde is 5-14 overall.

The Jackets took a 17-point advantage to the intermission and looked to be in control. Even after giving six of those points back in the third stanza, the Jackets seemed to have the contest well in hand until the final four minutes of the closing period.

The Vikings used a 14-3 run over a three-minute span late in the period to pull even at 45-45 with just under a minute to play.

Phillip Bias saved the day with a tip in of a Jacket miss with just 2.8 seconds left on the clock.

"There's no question this one almost got away from us," said Jacket basketball coach, George Dagnino. "They caught up with us so quick we panicked a little."

Both teams dressed and played several JV players in the contest. The Jacket JV accounted for 23 of the Palo Verde points on the night as 11 of the 12 Jackets dressed for the contest scored.

Damon Chen led the Jacket scoring with seven points while Jon Whiting and Rafael Adame each tallied six points. Marquis Bowen scored five and a trio of Jackets, Richard Henderson, Andre Hernandez and Bias accounted for four points each while Logan Whiting and Darien Herrera each connected on three-point shots. Vederi Atiyota completed the Palo Verde scoring with one point.

The road proved to be tough for the Jackets as DL losses to Imperial and Calipatria were followed by a non-league defeat at the hands of Central.

At Imperial, the Tigers took the lead early and cruised to a 76-39 win over the locals.

The Jackets hung close early but a 23-12 second period deficit paved the way for Imperial to take a 40-22 halftime advantage and the locals only managed 17 points after the break.

Henderson and Joseph Diaz led the Jacket scoring with eight points apiece while Adame, Herrera, and Bias each scored five. Jon Whiting was good for four as Kane Daniels and Atiyota rounded out the Jacket scoring with two points apiece.

The Calipatria Hornets were intent on avenging their double-overtime loss to the Jackets earlier in the season at the PVHS gym as they doubled up the Jackets 14-7 in the first quarter then built on the lead in each period after that as they rolled to a 66-33 victory.

Bias was the only Jacket in double figures with 10 points while Diaz tallied seven points and Herrera scored six. Atiyota had four points while Adame, Jon Whiting and Henderson each had two.

At Central, Palo Verde faced what Dagnino felt was the best team they had faced since Cathedral City, the third game of the season. It was over early for the Jackets as the Spartans improved a 24-12 first period advantage to 48-15 at the intermission and never looked back.

Henderson paced the Jackets with nine points while Diaz was good for six. Adame, Whiting and Atiyota each netted four points and Bias scored two.

The Jackets completed their season on Thursday when Calexico was in town.

This proves my point. We need to recruit new coaches. We need change! We barely beat Holtville what the heck!!! This game should of never got out of control. He dressed out all the JV and let them play, I guess at this point he really does care if we win. Making the varsity team in my day was a honor. It was something special and you worked hard to make the varsity team. These coaches all they do every game is experiment no game plan what so ever. Million turnovers all year. WOW good job c------- !!!!!
