BLYTHE - As the Palo Verde High School Lady Yellow Jacket basketball season nears the end of its first month, the Jackets continue to search for their first trip to the winners' circle.
For the most part, the locals are young and inexperienced and the season suffered a key blow when a tournament scheduled in Brawley fell through, costing the squad four games that could have helped with the experience aspect.
After their season opening tough 41-38 loss to Desert Mirage, the Jackets have had only six games over the past three weeks during a stretch that usually provides several more opportunities to improve and get that experience.
Two of those contests were against Needles, three more came in the River Valley Tournament, and the final pre-holiday break contest was on Tuesday when the Jackets hosted Shadow Hills of Indio.
At River Valley, the Jackets opened against the host Lady Dustdevil squad. River Valley outscored Palo Verde in each quarter as they rolled to a 47-14 triumph.
Ty Johnson and Luisa Gonzalez shared high scoring honors for the Jackets with four points apiece while Destiny Rivera tallied three, Haley Martin scored two and Kennedy Cox tallied one point. Martin was big on the boards for the Jackets as she hit double figures with 11 rebounds.
Parker was up next for the Jackets and after racing to an early 8-2 advantage in the opening period the Jackets were victims of a 12-3 Bronc run the rest of the quarter.
Parker then took control with a 26-7 scoring edge in the second quarter before cruised to a 64-21 decision.
Cox paced the Palo Verde scoring with 11 points while Rivera and Martin each tallied four points and Gonzalez scored two.
Ty Johnson found the range in game three of the tournament as she accounted for 14 Jacket points including a pair of three pointers in a 42-32 loss to Mohave.
Gonzalez chipped in seven points and Cox was good for six while Rivera and Rian Hannah scored three and two points respectively.
The two games with Needles were nearly two weeks apart and both were won by the Lady Mustangs.
At Needles, the Jackets managed just 11 points over the first two quarters and trailed 34-11 at the intermission. Palo Verde upped their game after the break as they outscored their hosts 25-17 in the final two periods as they lost 51-37.
Gonzalez and Marlena Felix were each good for eight points while Rivera and Cox each scored seven. Johnson contributed five points and Hannah scored two.
Game two at the PVHS gym followed a similar scenario as the Jackets struggled in the opening half and trailed 29-11 at the break then pretty much matched points with their guests in the second half as they fell 47-28.
Gonzalez, Johnson, and Rivera each scored eight points while Felix and Cox were each good for two.
A very athletic Lady Knight squad from Shadow Hills dominated from the start in PV's final pre-holiday break contest. The Lady Knights rolled to a 43-21 advantage in the opening half enroute to a 72-29 victory.
Palo Verde's point production dropped in each quarter as the Knights dominated play.
Cox led the Jacket scoring with eight points and Johnson had seven. Rivera tallied six points and Hannah was good for five. Felix scored two and Koli McKinney rounded out the Jacket scoring with one point.
The Lady Jackets picked up a tournament in Buckeye during the break and will begin Desert League play on Jan. 15 when they travel to Imperial.
