BLYTHE - With three more losses in the DIII Shootout and another road loss to Needles, the Palo Verde High School Yellow Jacket basketball team saw their record drop to 1-6.

The lone home loss was a 59-37 loss to the Santana Sultans where the locals actually held a 13-9 advantage after the opening quarter but saw the Sultans open the second period with an 18-0 run and eventually take a 33-19 advantage to the intermission.

The Jackets have had trouble in the third period of most of their games and this one was no different as Santana improved their advantage to 25 points in the third quarter and coasted to the win.

Only four Jackets scored in the contest as Phillip Bias led the way with 14 points and Robert Bowen was good for 13 counters while K.J. Bryant and Rafael Adame completed the Jacket scoring with eight and two points respectively.

In another DIII Shootout matchup in San Diego, the Jackets traveled to University City to take on the Centurions and came up on the short end of a 63-44 final.

The Jackets held their own through the first half and trailed by only four at 31-27 before the third-quarter doldrums hurt Palo Verde to the tune of a 19-6 deficit on the scoreboard. Uni City then eased to the win in the final stanza.

Bryant was the only Jacket in double figures with 12 points but eight different Palo Verde players put points on the board. Kane Daniels scored eight points while Bowen was good for seven. Bias scored five and Richard Henderson and Jon Whiting each tallied four. Adame connected on one three-pointer and Darien Herrera completed the Jacket scoring with one point.

The Jackets completed the pool portion of the DIII Shootout at Crawford High School where the Colts showed little mercy on the Jackets as they rolled to a 101-44 triumph.

The third period was actually the best offensive period for the Jackets as they scored 15 points in the quarter but the Colts had taken control early with a 37-11 edge in the first period and built on the lead in each quarter the rest of the way.

Bowen scored at least one basket in each quarter and finished with 12 points to lead the Jackets while Daniels tallied eight and Bryant was good for six points. Bias and Adame each scored five points while Henderson and Deaunte Munson were each good for four to round out the Jacket scoring.

At Needles, the Jackets led 16-15 after one quarter but the Mustangs used a 17-9 scoring edge in the second period to take the lead for good. Palo Verde made a run midway through the third stanza but the hosts put the quarter away and held on for a 69-54 triumph.

Bryant and Bias led the Jacket scoring with 13 and 10 respectively while Adame, Bowen, and Daniels each scored six. Whiting and Henderson scored five points apiece while Munson competed the Jacket scoring with four points.

"Against the very athletic teams we're not quick enough to match their speed and we don't rotate quick enough in our zone defense," said Jacket basketball coach, George Dagnino. "We're watching film on all the games and the guys are seeing their mistakes and figuring what they need to do to improve. We are getting better and improving each time out."

The Jackets completed the DIII Shootout at El Capitan High School in the pool matchup and will participate in the Lake Havasu Invitational over the weekend before returning home for a rematch with Needles on Monday at the PVHS gym.
