Palo Verde football faces Calexico for Parents' Night

BLYTHE - The Calexico Bulldogs will be the Palo Verde High School Yellow Jacket football team's opponent for tonight's Parents' Night at Scott Stadium.

Calexico has plenty of reason to want to extract some revenge on all opponents, including the Yellow Jackets. The Bulldogs won only one of their 19 games over the past two seasons and two of those were losses to Palo Verde.

Calexico broke out of their funk early with a win over Holtville and went on to win all five of their non-league preseason games.

The two league frontrunners, Brawley and Imperial, have both handed the Bulldogs lopsided defeats - but the border city lads enter tonight's Imperial Valley League contest with a 1-2 mark in league and a 6-2 overall slate.

While the Jackets' record for the season stands at 3-5, Palo Verde hasn't claimed an IVL victory to date.

Brawley and Central are the only two common opponents for the two teams. Both were handled easily by the Wildcats while the Jackets fell in a close contest to Central and the Bulldogs posted a two-touchdown victory against the Spartans.

The Jackets did face the Bulldogs in the preseason carnival and Calexico had the upper hand in that matchup. It was during the carnival that Palo Verde football coach George Dagnino, got a first-hand look at the Bulldogs and was quite impressed with the improvement of the squad.

"They really fly around on defense," said Dagnino. "They are primarily a running team but have the capability to throw the ball when they need to and have been very effective when they do."

The Bulldogs have cinched a winning record for the season with the six wins and still have the Jackets and Southwest on their schedule. It's the first winning record in almost 10 years for the border town school.

Calexico is a Division 1 team, so the playoffs are still a question despite the improvement. They would need to win the league to clinch a spot and with the losses to Brawley and Imperial, that's not going to happen.

"We're going to have our hands full against them," Dagnino said. "They are every bit as physical as Brawley but are not as polished."

Yellow Jacket players' parents will be introduced tonight prior to the start of the contest with the kickoff to follow at 7 p.m.
