BLYTHE, Calif. - The Palo Verde High School Lady Yellow Jacket basketball team duplicated their two victories of the first round of Desert League play with wins over Calipatria and Holtville to secure second place in the final league standings.
"It was one of our goals this season," said Jacket basketball coach, Tim Cox. "Now we'll have to see if it's good enough to get us into the Division 5 playoffs."
The other two games played over the two-week period featured losses to Imperial Valley League frontrunners, Calexico and Central.
At Calipatria, one of the toughest venues to play, the Jackets outscored their hosts 6-2 in the opening period and never trailed as they held off the Lady Hornets for a 26-23 victory.
Ty Johnson scored all eight of her team high points in the second half including a pair of three pointers to help hold off the Hornets. Rian Hannah also had a trey and finished the night with seven points while Ty Daniels contributed four points, Kennedy Cox had three and Koli McKinney along with Hana Luna each scored two points in the key win.
The win over Holtville at home featured an even lower scoring contest as the Jackets prevailed by a 26-10 margin.
Palo Verde managed just a 2-0 advantage after one period but used an 11-3 scoring edge in the second quarter to take a 13-3 advantage at the half.
The Jacket defense continued to be the story in the second half as Palo Verde held their guests to single digit scoring after the intermission.
Cox led the way for the Jackets with 12 points, spiriting the second period run with six counters. Daniels came next with seven points while Johnson scored four, McKinney scored two, and Hannah completed the Jacket scoring with one point.
Johnson had big games against the IVL schools as the Jackets managed to avoid getting into mercy timing in both the contests against Central and Calexico. The senior guard scored 15 points in each game, nearly half of the Jacket points in Palo Verde's 65-32 loss in El Centro and more than half the Jacket points in the home finale with Calexico in a 52-26 defeat.
At Central, the Jackets trailed by just nine at the intermission before the Lady Spartans took charge in the second half of their win. Johnson scored 13 of her 15 points in the third and fourth quarters as the Spartans turned up the guns in the second half outscoring the Jackets 43-18 after the break.
Cox contributed five points to the effort while McKinney and Daniels each had four, Hannah scored three, and Lauren Hardin completed the Jacket scoring with one point.
The Jackets continued to show improvement when they took on the IVL champion Lady Bulldogs of Calexico in the regular season's final contest.
A respectable first half saw the locals trail 24-11 before Calexico built the margin to 21 in the third period before coasting to the victory.
Johnson scored in each quarter as she again led the way for the Jackets. Cox chipped in six points while Daniels and McKinney rounded out the Jacket scoring with three and two points respectively.
