In an effort to give his wrestlers greater exposure in San Diego, Palo Verde Yellow Jacket wrestling coach, Frank Borboa, entered the La Costa Canyon Invitational this past weekend.

Ten Jacket wrestlers made the trip and seven were able to win enough matches to advance to the second day but two of those were bounced from the tournament as they were unable to make weight on Saturday, both by less than an ounce.

Robert Garcia (106) came closest to advancing to the medal round as he posted a 3-2 record in the tournament, winning twice by pin and once by decision, as he made the second day of wrestling.

Frankie Borboa (113) lost his opening match but earned a spot in the second day with a pair of pins before losing by decision to finish with a 2-2 mark for the tournament.

Angel Gomez (120) advanced to the second day after winning two of three matches by pin. A loss by pin in his first match on Saturday dropped him from the tourney.

Eric Hernandez (126) advanced to the second day after losing his opening match, only to win his second round match by pin after trailing late in the bout by a 13-1 deficit.

"Eric wrestled like a advanced wrestler although it's only his second year," said Coach Borboa. "The comeback was great, he never stops wrestling."

At 138 pounds, Uriel Guzman split his first two matches then earned his spot in the second day with a 46-second pin before losing his first match the following day to be eliminated.

Chris Shoemate (145) won two of three decisions to get into the second day but missed his weight by half an ounce to be eliminated from competition.

Brandon Barron (152) was the only Jacket wrestler to have to wrestle five times on the first day because of the high number of wrestlers in his weight. After opening his day with a 29-second win by pin, he went 2-2 the rest of the day and failed to advance.

"Although Brandon did not advance to the second day, he wrestled very tough," said Coach Borboa. "I was impressed by his effort, he dominated his three wins."

Sam Guilin (HWT) was the other Jacket to earn a spot in the second day's wrestling after winning two of three matches the first day. A split in his two bouts on Saturday bounced him from the tournament.

"Sam weighs 225 pounds but can wrestle opponents that weigh up to 285 pounds," Coach Borboa said. "He's one of the smallest guys in his weight but out wrestles most of his competition. He has a lot of heart."

The wrestlers were scheduled for another Imperial Valley League match at Central this past Wednesday and traveled to Palm Springs this past weekend for another tournament.
