BLYTHE - Joe Wine Blythe Recreation "C" Division Flag Football team traveled to San Clemente, Calif. to compete against 15 other teams in the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation (SCMAF) Flag Football Tournament. After two days, the locals earned second place after losing to Saddleback Valley in the championship game.
The first game against Duarte, the defense was the key, holding Duarte scoreless 14-0. Francisco Flores scored both Blythe touchdowns.
According to people in the crowd, the next game against the Oxnard Raiders was a barn burner. The Raiders scored on the first play of the game, but the locals came back to score on a Justin Iriarte run which tied the game 6-6 going into half time. The second half, Blythe marched down to score on another Flores run.
The defense played great with interceptions by Iriarte and Ty Phipps to help seal the win.
Game three against Pasadena was another thriller with Blythe scoring first on a Flores run and a Ty Cruz to Hadley Phipps extra point. With five minutes to go in the game, Pasadena scored to tie the game 7-7 sending the game into a tie breaker.
A Brock Peterson pass to Kason Price on the fourth down, sealed the win for Blythe, 13-7.
The Championship game pitted Blythe against Saddleback Valley. The well-coached and highly talented Saddleback Valley easily handed the locals a 28-0 loss.
Coach Jeff Phipps and assistant coaches Albert Albanez, Scott Peterson, and Todd Phipps are proud of the players and that the success was a total team effort.
Phipps also thanked the parents and fans who made the trip, as well as a thank you to Tacy Copple and the Joe Wine Blythe Recreation Department, and to the Blythe Rec N' Crew.
