BLYTHE - The Palo Verde High School Yellow Jacket basketball team upset Shadow Hills 50-34 Tuesday evening at the PVHS gym to claim their second win of the season.

The Jackets stand at 2-5 having dropped two games to Needles and winning just one of four contests in the Imperial Classic Basketball Tournament this past week.

Tuesday's win was considered an upset because the Knights also participated in the Classic and, after tripping up Imperial in their opening round contest, added wins over Calexico and Cathedral City before falling to Central in the title game.

Against the Knights, Palo Verde led early and, after giving up the advantage midway through the opening period, took the lead for good with just under a minute to play in the first quarter.

A 13-3 scoring edge in the second period gave the locals a 26-14 lead at the intermission.

The Knights scored five quick points in the first 30 seconds of the second half but Jordan Velarde scored six of his game-high 14 points in the third quarter to help the Jackets maintain a ten-point advantage.

Palo Verde then held the Knights to six points in the final period to win by 16.

Richard Henderson added seven points off the bench while Logan

Whiting, Eddie Vasquez, and Darien Herrera each scored six. Marquis

Bowen was good for five points, Kane Daniels had four counters before being sidelined with an injury, and Rafael Adame completed the Jacket scoring with two points.

"The guys played with a lot of energy and resolve in front of the home crowd," said Jacket head coach, Coy Bradstreet. "It's great to see them play closer to their potential."

In the two games with Needles, Daniels produced most of the offense as he tallied 24 points in each contest but the Jackets managed only 50 points in each game, falling 60-50 at home and 65-50 at Needles.

The Jackets defeated CETYS in the sub-consolation semifinals of the Imperial Tournament by a 47-38 count. Velarde scored five of his team-high 13 points in the final quarter as the Jackets used a 12-2 scoring edge in the period to claim the win.

In the tournament opener, Daniels scored seven of his team-high 12 points in the opening period as the Jackets led 15-8 going to the second quarter but couldn't maintain the lead and fell 54-42.

Velarde was the only other Jacket in double figures with 11 points.

Indio, who had fallen to Central in the opening round, had five players in double figures as they dispatched the Jackets by a 71-35 count.

Daniels, Velarde, and Whiting all had six points to lead Palo Verde.

Palo Verde faced another Imperial Valley League rival in the final round as Southwest held off the Jackets for a 63-57 victory.

Darien Herrera connected on five three-pointers and scored 19 of his game high 21 points in the first half as the Jackets led 34-28 at the intermission. But the Eagles owned the second half as they used a 35-23 scoring advantage to take the win.

Velarde and Rafael Adame were also in double figures for the Jackets as they scored 16 and 12 points respectively for Palo Verde.

The Yellow Jackets were scheduled to play a non-league contest at Desert Mirage on Thursday before traveling to Phoenix over the break for another holiday tournament.
