Jackets join IVL march into CIF playoffs Friday

BLYTHE - Much to the surprise of Jackets football coach, George Dagnino, Palo Verde enters this weekend's first round of the Division 5 playoffs when they host Army-Navy Academy in a 7 p.m. game at Scott Stadium Friday.

Dagnino felt the Jackets had to pull off an upset of Imperial to even have a chance to make the field.

"We are fortunate to get into the playoffs," Dagnino said. "We need to make the most of the opportunity we have."

All six of the Imperial Valley League teams earned spots in the teams' respective divisions. And all but Calipatria from the Southeastern Conference made the field somewhere.

Top-seeded and unbeaten Crawford takes on Calvary Christian Academy for the second game in the upper part of the Division 5 bracket. The winner faces the Palo Verde/Army-Navy winner the following week.

Manzanita League match-ups make up the second half of the Division 5 bracket as Vincent Memorial travels to Holtville and Escondido Charter will travel to Mountain Empire.

IVL champion, Imperial drew a three seed and a first round bye in Division 2 play. The Tigers face the Del Norte-El Capitan winner in Imperial the following week.

Brawley, IVL's other Division 2 team, got ninth seed and travels to Mission Bay Friday to try to earn a shot against the Division's top-ranked team, Madison, with a win.

Division 3 11th seed Calexico faces sixth seed Hoover in San Diego. The winner of that contest travels to Hilltop next week for a quarterfinal matchup. Central, competing in Division 4 received a bye as the Division's fourth seed. The Spartans could get a rematch with the Southwest if the 12th seeded Eagles pull off an upset when they travel to Montgomery on Friday.
