BLYTHE - The Palo Verde High School Yellow Jacket football team saw their Imperial Valley League record slip to 0-2 with a 35-7 loss at Southwest in El Centro Friday night.

The loss was particularly disappointing as it gave the Eagles their first win of the year and leaves the Jackets with the toughest part of their league schedule left to play.

"We let Southwest gain a ton of confidence and they capitalized on our mistakes," said Jacket football coach, George Dagnino.

Initially, the Jackets were in great position when they opened the contest with a successful on-side kick recovered by Robert Angulo. An ensuing Eagle penalty and a 15-yard completion from Ryan Galvan to Treshaun Edmond got the Jackets close. The drive fizzled, however, and Felix Ruiz missed a 26-yard field goal attempt as the Jackets came up empty.

"We didn't take advantage of the opportunities we had early in the game," Dagnino said. "We have to come away with some kind of points every time we are in the red zone."

Southwest failed to gain much ground on their first possession but took the ball midway through the second period and marched 71 yards on 15 plays to put the first touchdown on the board on the second play of the second period.

Before the first half ended, the Eagles tallied two more touchdowns; The first coming at the 7:23 mark of the second quarter and, after a high snap on a Jacket punt attempt, left Southwest with just seven yards to cover, the Eagles took advantage and a 21-0 lead to the intermission.

The second half didn't start much better as the Eagles intercepted a Galvan pass midway through the third quarter and returned it for their fourth score of the night.

Palo Verde got on the board on the ensuing possession as they covered 64 yards on eight plays and scored their lone touchdown of the night with 5:21 to play in the third quarter as Angulo scored on a 10-yard run.

The Eagles scored their final touchdown in the last minute of the third stanza to end the game's scoring.

Galvan finished the night with 10 completions on 30 attempts for 92 yards while suffering a pair of interceptions. Jacket back up quarterback, Logan Whiting, suffered the other turnover when one of his two passing attempts was intercepted.

Edmond finished with five catches for 41 yards while Destin Cross had three receptions and Cody Holladay hauled in two passes for 33 and 18 yards respectively.

For the second straight game, Angulo carried the bulk of the Jacket ground game as he rushed for 106 yards on 23 totes while KJ Bryant was good for 23 yards on his two carries.

Defensively, Ivan Aguayo was credited with seven stops including one assisted tackle while Josh Messerli had four solos and one assist. Vederi Atyota, Alberto Louriero, and Majerli Salazar each had four tackles on the night while Roy Reid had five stops and recovered the other Eagle turnover in the game after Henry Miranda forced a fumble.

The game completed the Jacket road schedule for the season as they will spend the final three IVL games at Scott Stadium beginning with this Friday's showdown with Brawley.

"I guarantee our kids will work hard to improve and get better for the home stand," Dagnino said.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Coach Odum has resigned from KAOL. Had a winning season too, with only one loss to date. Check out Kingman daily Miner.
