OBITUARY: Alberta May Wolford

Alberta Wolford entered into rest on Jan. 14, 2013 at the age of 83 after a short battle with cancer.

She was born in Stockton, Calif. on July 19, 1929, and raised there. She married James Oliver Durham in 1946.

At the age of 29, she was widowed with four children to raise on her own, the youngest being only five months old. In 1963, she married Kenneth Alden Adams and her fifth child was born from this union. After 19 years of marriage, this union ended in divorce.

In 1984, Blythe native Jerry Wolford, Jr. captured her heart and they married. Jerry converted Alberta from Baptist to Methodist where they attended and were active in the United Methodist Church for more than two decades. She sang in the choir and either taught or was director of the yearly vacation bible school for many years. She was instrumental in adding a nursery in the main church building, and was known as "Grandma" at Sunshine Preschool, as she and her husband Jerry would read to the children every Friday in the '90s. She and Jerry later relocated to the Church of Christ and became beloved members there.

Alberta was a lady in every sense of the word. She loved with all of her heart. She loved all her step grandchildren as if they were her own. They were all treasures to her. Her life was all about her family and her home. She loved cooking, baking, ironing, and cleaning. Her hobbies were gardening, decorating, sewing, a love of the outdoors, and painting anything that would stand still.

Her life's trials always brought her closer to faith in the lord. Her family was always proud of the lady she was, she was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all.

Alberta is survived by her husband, Jerry Wolford; sister, Linda (Bob) Wylie; sister-in-law, Dorothy Riley; her sons, James L. (Daphne) Durham, and Greg Durham; her daughters, Cindy (John) Bunyan and Janis (Michael) Lendway; step-daughter, Judy Lehr; stepsons, Gerald Wolford III, Steve Wolford, and Randy (Laurie) Wolford; grandchildren, Jill Lawrence, Jaime (Todd) Perrin, Heather Lawrence, James K. Durham, Amanda (Don) Salters, Valerie Lendway, James Douglas Durham, Brandon Lendway, and Alaire Durham; step grandchildren, Joann (Hart) Gull, Adam Hunt, Brad (Esther) Wolford, Chad (Cloei) Wolford, Christopher Wolford, BreeAnna (Rick Nestor) Wolford, Mathew Wolford, and Jenny Wolford; great-grandchildren, Deven Garcia, Victoria Lawrence, David Lawrence, Katelyn Lawrence, Aaron Bunyan, Shannah Bunyan, Macie Bunyan, Eric Bunyan, Joey Salters, D.J. Salters, Jake Salters, Melanie Salters, Kristopher Perrin and Hailey Perrin; step-great-grandchildren, Nathan Wolford, Shane Wolford, and Maddisyn Wolford; and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her second son, Douglas Durham, and her step-daughter, Jeannie Bynum.

A memorial will be held on Feb. 2, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the Church of Christ, in Blythe, Calif.

She will be laid to rest in Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, Calif. In lieu of flowers please donate to the American Cancer Society.

Grandma Alberta was one of the kindest person I have ever known. She had the most comforting and warmest heart that would just draw you to her. The times when I was a kid with the family at Camp Redwood are the memories I will cherish the most. Love you Grandma Alberta.
