BLYTHE - Roy and Josephine Robles celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in Laughlin, Nev. on Oct. 28. Accompanying the couple were their sons and their wives, Roy and Patricia Robles of Palm Desert, and Rick and Denell Robles of Fallbrook, and their three children, Rio, Derrick and Angelina.

Josephine's brother and his wife, Joe and Elaine Leon of Topanga Canyon, Calif., also attended the celebration. In addition, two other granddaughters, Andria Robles Guzman and Dan Guzman of Oceanside and their daughter Ellie, and Jenica Robles and Tony Lederman of Huntington Beach, also attended.

The couple was married 60 years ago at the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, in Blythe, where they met. Roy Robles, Sr., was born in Florence, Ariz., in 1928 and came to Blythe after serving in the US Navy to attend Palo Verde College in 1948. Josephine was born in Rice, Calif. in 1934 and is a graduate of Palo Verde High.

Roy began his postal career as a carrier for the Blythe post office and served as postmaster for many years.

He retired in 1989 after 40 years of service with the post office. Josephine worked as a bank teller at Security Pacific National Bank for numerous years.

The anniversary celebration included a dinner cruise aboard the "Celebration" River Boat in Laughlin on the Colorado River. The family enjoyed a delicious dinner and a scenic view of the river and the surroundings.

The happily married Robles continue to reside in Blythe.

Happy Anniversary to you both, Roy and Josie. I have known you most of my life and it has been a joy. It was always fun going to your house with my aunt and uncle, Joe and Esperanza Ruiz. I wish you both many more years together. I never met a happier couple. And you have beautiful children. Congrats!!

Forgot to add that the first football game I saw the men from Florence play for the Pirates was at the rodeo grounds, no grass just dirt. Scotts Stadium had not been built. Later the rodeo grounds became a housing area known as Rodeo Gardens.

Congratulations to Roy and Josephine, a lovely couple.
There's another story here...at least four young men from Florence, AZ joined the Navy towards the end of the war, including Roy, and after their discharge followed theiir HS football coach where he relocated to coach the PVJC Pirates. My brother-in-law, Walt Brunenkant, was one of them. If you visit the town museum in Florence, AZ there is a corner of the museum about the Brunenkant Family and their historic contribution to the community.
