Bankruptcies haunt Healthcare District board incumbents

Marty Bachman

BLYTHE -Two current Healthcare District Board members filed bankruptcy prior to serving on the board, records show. The pair oversee Palo Verde Hospital's multi-million dollar budget among other duties.

Sandra Hudson, aka Sandra Starkman, who was elected to a two-year seat in 2008 and faces re-election on Nov. 2, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in June of 1999, citing between $100,000 and $500,000 in debts and zero assets.

Beverly Mays, who was appointed to the board last summer by Riverside County Supervisor John J. Benoit, also filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy in March 2009 over debts between $100,000 and $500,000. Mays claimed to have less than $50,000 in assets at the time of her filing.

Hudson racked up $46,000 in credit card debt and had a $12,384 judgment filed against her. She owed $53,650 in services she received, which included $38,901 due a local Blythe man.

She defaulted on a personal loan of $41,250 to Redstone Holdings and $6,700 due a Brawley company for hay and other services. Other debts include $437 to Nationwide Credit for fuel, $91 to Sprint, $270 to AT&T and $697 to Gottschalks. Hudson owed 21 different agencies a total of more than $161,000 in debts.

The case was discharged in October 1999 but re-opened in March of 2002, when Hudson filed a motion to avoid a judgment lien on her residence that had been filed by Valley Independent Bank against her property on Seville Lane in Blythe. The case was then closed for the second time in June 2002.

Mays, Blythe's former vice-mayor prior to be being voted off the city council in November 2008, owed $165,514 on her primary residence, $11,044 on a 2005 Chrysler 300 car loan, $70,199 on a rental property, and $23,065 on a vehicle loan for a 2007 Chevy Silverado pickup truck.

Her unsecured debts included $753 owed to the county of Los Angeles for moving vehicle violations, $305 for a traffic ticket issued by Riverside County Sheriff's, a $699 child support overpayment received, a $1,359 overpayment received from Social Security, a $283 fee for a returned vehicle registration fee, and almost $4,000 owed to the IRS for the year 2006.

Mays owed almost $10,000 to local business including $774 to Palo Verde Hospital, which billed her for medical services. Other locals left on the hook were Halby's Store for Men, Linda Faulkner Dance School, CB Plumbing, Alex's Tire's, Dr. David Choi, Dr. Timothy Port, and Glenn Johnson Cooling and Heating.

Altogether Mays owed money to 81 different agencies and individuals totaling close to $500,000 in debts, and listed a monthly income of $2,873.

Albeit true, libel can also b based on "malice with intent 2 cause harm." This blog or what ever u call it has no other purpose than 2 stir hatred for the very reason that it is Public Record. It is reprinted by pvvt with "malice and reckless disregard" for the 2 parties involved. The other 100's of blogs about Sandy can b used 2 prove this. "A malicious publication, expressed either in printing, writing, typewritten, or by signs and pictures tending either to blacken the memory of one who is deceased, or the REPUTATION of one who is alive, and expose him to public hatred, contempt or ridicule." (Balentine's Law Dictionary). Exactly the purpose of this rerun.

It was valid news then when it went into the public domain the same as their filing for bankruptcy was and is in the PUBLIC DOMAIN. There is no liability there because THEY are the ones who filed for bankruptcy and that was and is still news and PUBLIC DOMAIN!

Holy Rattlesnake Poop!
I can't believe people are still having their panties in a bunch over a 3 year old story. As for kicking an old dead dog, it seems to me that that dog has decomposed and now you just enjoy stepping in what you think is its remains. If you want to bring up old stuff recirculate the travesty that happened to Allan Bebout and his property. Somebody is still reaping the benefits of how he was screwed over. RIP Allan.

Why is it that whenever there is an article regarding the hospital that is not negative towards the current Board or Dr. Sahlolbei, the newspaper drags up an old negative article. This article didn't work (deleted) the first 3 times it was on the front page-during elections-and it is old news now. There are always many sides to any situation, unfortunately with a newspaper that is so biased it is hard to get the "true" facts out to the public.

heads up Sandy and Beverly, this reprinting of this article could be libel. "A maliciously written or printed publication which tends to blacken a person's reputation or to expose him to public hatred, contempt or ridicule, or to injure him in his business or profession. (Corbi v. Curtis 441 Pa 432, 273 A.2d 899,904). The first printing on 10/07/2010 was not libel, it was news and had to do with your running for the PVDH board. This second printing is obviously to cause you harm. Freedom of speech was exercised in the first printing. See your lawyer.

I think you really mean the hospital makes money when the board kisses up to the mec...Which that is what the three frogs are doing right now ...You're all so weak and yet think you are great...A lot of us know different...Let the CEO one time disagree with Sulolbei and see how long it takes for her to hit the road...I hope you can sometime be seen in public without a brown nose...

The healthcare district has always covered the MEC's legal expenses. You talk about losing money when we have board members that get along with the MEC but you really should look at the past and you will see that money is made when the board gets along with the MEC instead of fighting with them. Just look at all the money lost from 2010 through 2012, MILLIONS!!!! How about the new CEO just hired for $177k a year? That is $300k a year less than what we paid the last full time CEO Peter Klune. Yet you your ilk say that the new board is not doing the right thing.

If you wish to correct the Hospital Problems at the next election (if there is one).
Do not vote for the candidates that the MEC supports. Every time you do you lose money and District control of your hospital.
Case in point is the new Board Burton, Hudson and Sartin just approved new MEC bylaws that make the district responsible for 250,000 of lawsuits among other things. Check out the last agenda packet and see!
